Its called harassment. I've had two genuinely positive experiences with the police, once when I unknowingly lost lights on the Yugo due to a broken alternator wire. She was even nice enough to point out a good spot to push start it when it decided to not crank over. And once when I, new to boulevard driving, hung a right off 8 mile onto mound in the second lane from the curb.
Everything else was the cops being a bunch of nosy power tripping shiny happy people. Particularly one experience with US customs.
The ion redline I had was horrible......although I went 1 for 22 on traffic stops while driving it, only one cop was a E36 M3head(not the one that gave me the ticket), and the rest were alright. Got out of a couple triple digit speeding violations by chatting with the officer about by choice in firarms(constantly armed with something unusual)
Nova, if you ever started a conversation like that with me, I probably still wouldn't ticket you, but I'd make you sit there to waste your time. What you describe yourself as saying is the equivelant of the cop coming to the window and asking "What's your goddamned hurry" nitpicking everything wrong. Since the respect street goes both ways, I've discovered 21 times out of 22 that having a polite conversation will go much further towards not having a bad interaction.

perhaps, but with the way cops are taking more and more of a militaristic "me vs the civilian world" attitude lately, i've learned to not tell them anything more than they need to know. but being me, i always have to get some dumb smartass comment in there somewhere- right at the end is the best place to do it, since they are less likely to want to have to go back to the car, get out the ticket book, and write me another ticket.. as far as holding me up- i'm never in a hurry to get anywhere, since i always like to leave myself at least a half hour cushion for things like flat tires (that never happen- honestly, in 22 years of driving i've had exactly 2 flats while driving..) and bored cops on fishing expeditions.
Yea, the "telling the obvious" just comes off as a douchey....and wait a tic, I thought the northern states police forces were only there to keep those berkeleying cannucks out....
My experince with the 5-0 has been mostly good, well there were two instances with power tripping highway patrol types. One was in SC, the other in NC.
Given that they have a really dangerous job, for instance several years ago one was killed at a traffic stop not a mile from where I work, the driver he pulled over shot him in the face and left him to die in the road and the killer has not been caught yet, they have a right to be a bit antsy.
There's no point in me being a smartass if I get pulled. If I'm polite, he/she is polite (with the two exceptions noted above). I've been let go plenty of times 
and that beats running off at the mouth and thus all but guaranteeing myself a court date.

they're not doing a very good job.. i see probably as many Canuck license plates on this stretch of I94 as i do 'Murkin plates.

driving down Old Fort mountain this past spring, in the track decaled CRX with a tire trailer pulled behind it. ( 55 mph ... very steep mt. 4 lane interstate) the low speed limit is mainly for the trucks ... quite often they've lost their brakes and caused pretty big crashes ...
I rolled up behind a car going the required 55, in the left lane, and no room to pass on the right ... SO I was following too close and later going ~ 65 ...
those of you that know CRX's know you can't see much out the back ( at least if you're 6'2'' and there is a 4 pt roll bar that narrows the rear view even more) and the tire trailer makes it even harder to see anything behind you ( tires stick up in the air a little bit)
the HP rolled up right behind me before I saw him .. sure enough, on come the blue lights
I pull over and wait for him ... as he's walking towards me ( he can't see in any better than I can see out) his right hand is on his pistol ( holstered ) ... I roll down the drivers window and stick both hands out so he can see them ... then I see him give me a slight thumbs up with his left hand ... things only got better from that pt on ... ( warning ticket only )
the point of the story ... I obviously was trying to make his job easier/safer and he seemed to appreciated that ... smart ass from me might not have ended quite so well
Considering everything I own has tinted windows, #1 thing I do is roll em down while finding a safe and wide spot to stop.......dome light comes on. Considering im always carrying said weapons, id much rather not get shot by a rookie 3 days out of the academy with the "Guns are bad, mmmkay" thinking still in place.

Road workers are paid with my taxes. There's risks to being on a road crew, abet not the same as a cop's. I don't see any of them holding me up with their "Stop/Slow" signs because they have the power to do so and/or are board.
I bet the worst dealership in the world would be one owned by a cop and a lawyer
local tire and repair shop is owned by a city Po-Po ... they're pretty easy to deal with ( and so is he ... at least at the shop )

You have cop cars that say things on them? I see more and more grey cars with POLICE in a different shade of gray and those low profile light bars every day. My home town, a quiet little place where nothing really goes wrong, just got a grey, barely marked, F-150 with a leer cap on it.
Thankfully, the state cops, while dicks all the same, are highly visible.

I've also had my MX6 searched for drugs 4 times.
I've gotten pulled over for doing the speed limit on an on-ramp.
I've only ever gotten ONE ticket in my lifetime, and i deserved it. I've been pulled over approaching 20 times while breaking not a single law.

If it was an attitude problem on my part, i'd be getting tickets. I'm perfectly respectful to every cop who pulls me over because i KNOW the majority of them here are douchenozzles itching for an excuse to make someone's day a hassle.
Which is why they pulled ME over in the first place, instead of the mommy van passing me going 20mph over the speed limit while texting and screaming at her kids.
It's probably just the area. I've never had an issue with cops in any other state.
Really my biggest problem is that i'm getting pulled over in the first place while NOT breaking a single law. Aren't there laws against profiling?

If I was a cop.. I would ask him to step out of the vehicle. That is acting suspecious in my book. As for myself.. I have gotten out of more tickets than I have gotten due to one simple fact.. I pull WAY off of the road. If I am on a main road, I hit the 4ways and pull onto a side road so the cop is out of traffic.. if I am on the highway, I put my car onto the grass. The Cops appreciate not having to worry about getting smacked by a mirror from a passing mommyvan
