Last night I woke up about 3am. Not sure what woke me up, but I got out of bed, visited the head, got a drink, and as usual, stepped out on the back porch.
No sooner did the latch clike, I heard this.

It scared the absolute crap out of me. I didn't know if someone was getting murdered or what. I've lived in fox country 40 years and never heard anything like it. Took me 45 minutes to get my heard rate down enough to go back to sleep.
I might have had to go back to the head for a second visit if that happened to me. We are more inclined to have a bear walk by than a fox though.
Sure took you a long time to post this........
Coyotes can sound the same. Mountain lions as well. If you didn't see it, it could have one of the two as well. The mountain lion sounds more like a woman's blood curdling scream.
If you don't live in an area that has coyotes or mountain lions, their spreading out. I'm not far out of the city and we've had the mountain lions a few miles away by the Missouri River.
We have bobcats as well and I added this for cuteness points.

The worst I get in the city is stray cats yowling at each other and occasionally fighting for territory. But I'll be damned if those things don't sound like distressed babies the first few times you hear them. Waking up at 3am to the sound of a lost undead toddler crying its way down the street is a rather unpleasant experience.
Funny thing is, I grew up in the country hearing that sound as a little kid, with a couple outdoor cats of our own vying for territory with other cats, raccoons and possums. So the first few times I heard that sound in the city again, I was immediately a scared four year old startled at midnight by the demons in the woods.
Pretty sure I heard mountain lions last time I was camping at a friend's property. Something INCREDIBLY creepy and human-sounding off in the woods; funny to head semi-controlled, semi-panicked breathing coming from a few different tents.

Yea, a buddy of mine living close to the quarries on the Missouri before the Mississippi actually spotted one. He told Missouri Wildlife, but their denying they are in Missouri. They then told him not to kill it.
We got lots of these guys running around where I work.
Heard one the other day, sounded like a baby crying.

I had to figure out what the hell it was first.
we have a lot of fox here in South Jersey. They are even on the barrier islands (like Atlantic City)
The thing that freaked me out the most though.. were the Fishercats up in New England
So did you throw Muffy outside to deal with it?
I've been seeing more foxes here in the Illiana area as well. Had to do some evasive maneuvers to avoid one the last time I drove the Miata, in fact. And I just saw a Facebook post that bobcats have been photographed at a nearby nature preserve.
What gets me is the increase of Blue Herron flying about the past few years. The dam things look like pterodactyl.

All I heard this morning was some crows and an owl.

A bull gator has a roar that will get your attention, too.
Yeah, I'd have needed these

Don't they? love to watch them walk through the shallows hunting small fish
The foxes around here love to do that E36 M3 on beautiful nights when I leave the windows open. They are no danger though - the dogs desperately want to meet them. We have rattlers sunning on the rocks and ticks that will berkeley you up with lyme disease I worry about here.

Same story in Michigan. Some houndsmen that I know have seen a cougar's track when out bobcat hunting. The DNR told them that they were nuts, there are not any here, but don't shoot it unless it is killing you.

Wiki says they're sort of an oversized-weasel that eats porcupines (among other things)
In reply to iceracer:
It is essentially a scaled down wolverine.

I've heard foxes and coyotes many times, no mountain lions yet. But the most scary are bobcats.
Think about 6 Boy Scouts and their leader in a cabin up in the Laurel Mountains of PA with a bobcat walking around outside screaming all night long. None of us got any sleep that night!!
How come no one relized it has to be a Sasquatch.
