Well temporarily and it wouldn't be the first time I've done this.
This election has brought out the worst in almost everyone. Facebook has now become a cesspool of racism and hatred. Instead of unfriending almost everyone I know, I just deactivated my account, shuffled the app icon somewhere to the back of my phone, and will continue on with life.
Maybe I'll check back in a couple months to see if everyone has gotten their heads out of their asses.

Yep, this would probably be a great idea for me too. Unfortunately I'm at a university and involved in several local hobby groups, and 100% of the events I go to are organized on Facebook (including some professional stuff, e.g. talks & seminars at the uni.) It would kill my social life to leave but I'm wondering if I should bite the bullet and fexit anyway.

Mine is still mainly filled with car and bike stuff. At least that's all I pay attention to.
There are a few outliers that I either ignore or have temporarily unfollowed. There are a couple I have blocked completely because they just can not converse intelligently but that's not a recent development.
Between the OHHHH YEAHHHH!!!s and the crying, there is a little bit of normalcy that is still worth reading.
I'm definitely ready for everyone to get their heads out of their butts.
Unfriended two (polar opposite) women months ago who flooded my page w/ liberal or conservative links, 20+ ea./ day. Goners. Put two more on Block till after the election fallout is over.
Even if you don't keep friends, FB is still good for news feeds alone. Mine are mostly local/ breaking news, automotive, racing or sports related. I find it useful yet, makes life easier so just like another tool in the 'ol toolbox.
I just "unfollow" anyone who posts too much negative crap, and damn near everything political is negative.

The news feeds & "trending topics" are the issue for me. Most of my friends on there are entirely decent people who don't deride or insult others for their political views. Meanwhile I'm getting flooded with jingoistic hate & dogma from sources I don't even care about and I can't turn off. It's easy to say "just look away" but that's like not staring at a wreck on the highway. Yeesh.
This was my one "political" post. I don't care whom you voted for, but I do hope you voted if able.
I'll respect your decision if you respect mine.
My FB Post said:
Is it safe to say the majority of people have been just disgusted with this election?
I propose that future elections disallow mentioning the other party(s) actions, words or past. In the future, candidates may only speak of themselves and the future.
The vast MAJORITY of political advertising has only been saying what a horrible opponent the other person(s) are.
I did vote today. Trust me, I do not feel confident in whom I chose.
But given the alternative? I went with my gut and it still isn't sitting well.
A number of acquaintances have been die-hard one way or the other. Sadly, I could not be one of those people. I wish we all could be.
Reading numerous Facebook, Reddit, and internet forums, it seems my feelings are the majority.
That feeling being I need to vote and hope for the best, however, the choices aren't that appealing
Its better if you just unfollow.
I had one friend who went on a "sandy hook was a lie" bent and then another who was like a personal echo chamber for Clinton.
I'm done with them. I have no tolaerance for conspiracy theorists on either side.
Turned off notifications on the phone, dragged the app to the back of the folder. Unfollowed various people. Haven't ventured on for a while. Facebook is messed up.

Just did the same. Cold turkey works best for me.
I dunno man, there have been some stellar memes that have come from all of this.
You really do learn how people truly are during times like these. And it's not pretty.
I have a rule that I only friend people who own racecars. Cuts way down on fluff. Pisses my mom off. If she wants to talk to me that bad she should buy a racecar.
I never joined, easiest to quit
Facebook quit me!
Locked me out of my account and demanded legal documentation to prove my name.
There was a very short withdrawal time, I barely miss it.
Eat E36 M3 FB!

Me neither. I have no desire to be tracked down by the people I went to high school with many years ago. I didn't like them then, and I figure it's pretty unlikely anything has changed. Even my highly developed sense of schadenfreude is not enough to make me sign up.
I deleted my myspace page in 2005 and never looked back.
My family is spread all over the country, and the few friends I do have are spread all over too. Aside from the GRMers I've managed to track down on FB all of my FB friends are people I know and like IRL.
I am a little butt hurt that little Tommy Suddard didn't accept my friend request though, I wonder if it's something I said...
I stopped shortly before the election, couldn't take the heat, got out of the kitchen. Don't really miss it. This could become permanent.

Can't quit what I never started.
I defriended a few recently, some were even family. Not because of politics per se as I've got friends and family members who are all over the spectrum politically.
No, I dropped them because I realized I either didn't know them well enough to care or they were so rabidly combative about everything that I just didn't need the constant trolling or inane, overly dramatic posts.
My cousin was unhappy about my defriending, but she's a useless and overly dramatic person who is unwilling to listen or admit when she's wrong and her echo chamber of friends will jump on you. I don't need that E36 M3 and she doesn't need to be reading about what I post.
If it wasn't for the racing contacts, I'd probably drop Facebook altogether.
I somehow manage to survive without it. I don't need anymore reasons to hate people.
Like smoking...if you don't start you don't have to quit!
But, I'm probably on some kind of government watchlist because I don't have any social media accounts...
I saw people I know well that I would consider well educated jump the shark Wednesday morning and start attacking people personally and making slanderous accusations that were borderline criminal. The funny part is I bet they don't have the stones to do it in person.
I signed out and have not looked back. Going to miss the car stuff but the toxic environment that facebook has created is something I want no part of for the foreseeable future.
