Seriously. Didn't we make a rule a ways back that political threads just weren't worth our time? Off topic is chock full of threads lately that are touching on some very sensitive issues in extremely ham fisted ways. I'm an 11 year member of the forums and it's got me ready to swear off the off-topic section. I can only imagine how it looks to newbies. We've all got opinions we're willing to shout ourselves hoarse over while the other side does the same thing.

I'll save some of you some time and type out a few responses for you:

"You're being too sensitive."

"You don't have to read those threads."

If you don't have to read them (which you don't) then why worry about them?

Is it better to -not- discuss "sensitive issues"?

They're sensitive because people have a hard time talking about them, that's also why the discussion can be ham-fisted.

The way to make a "sensitive issue" less sensitive is to have open discussion about it and hopefully make it a non-issue.

I don't want discussions to drive people away from the forum but I also think Off-Topic is serving its purpose with those sorts of threads. It seems pretty easy to avoid as long as the threads are named in a way that makes it easy to know the subject.

Discussion is fine and dandy, it's just that a few people turn discussion into "why my opinion is right and you're an idiot". There have been a few threads that the discussion amounts to one word name calling of specific groups.

I couldn't love GRM the magazine or the website more, and believe me, I don't like to be the P.C police or anything or the guy who has a problem with everything thing, but I do have a problem with this...

I find it a bit offensive that you use terms like "Ham Fisted," "political," "Sensitive Issues," "off topic" and "newbies" etc etc... for your little descriptions or whatever in the postings. I myself do not have special needs, nor am I a special ed teacher or counselor, but I feel sensitivity for people with special needs as I am a student taking special ed classes, and my Girlfriend is pursuing her masters in the field.

These terms although I'm pretty sure are not even real words, are obviously meant to resemble the words used to describe people with Delusional Political Paranoia identity impairments, and it appears that they are used on these boards in a joking sense which, as I view it, makes light of people who are afflicted with political cognitive disabilities.

I have a theory about political views.

Oh, what is my theory? This is it. (clears throat at some length) My theory that belongs to me is as follows. (clears throat at great length) This is how it goes. The next thing I'm going to say is my theory.

My theory by A. Elk. Brackets Miss, brackets. This theory goes as follows and begins now. All brontosauruses are thin at one end, much, much thicker in the middle and then thin again at the far end. That is my theory, it is mine, and belongs to me and I own it, and what it is too.

No wait, that's not my theory. What I meant to say is that wherever someone falls on the bell curve political spectrum, anyone that's more than two standard deviations away in either direction is a nut job. (with apologies to Monty Python)

As it has been since before the dawn of the internet. It's not that hard to avoid once you learn the warning signs, which usually aren't subtle.

Everything I've needed to know about how to approach sensitive topics I learned on a discussion forum.

I think to myself daily "if I say this, will I get banned?"

"Is this a patio topic?"

"Don't call anybody right/left liberal/conservative or assume anything about anyone."

"Keep the majority of my thoughts to myself."

"Don't tell coworkers I intended on buying a 1989 Plymouth Voyager."

"Why did I tell coworkers I bought a 1989 Plymouth Voyager?"
