For several years we used to move frequently. Lots of state lines crossed.
Throwing away and donating E36 M3 you don't need is cathartic. Not having to move it is simply a relief.

Amen. We're already paring down. We went from a pretty full 2600sq ft house down to a mildly full 1200sq ft house (with basement). We're about to purge the basement and be ready for even less "stuff". It's all about the adventure now.
Twenty five years ago, my in-laws retired, sold the family home and packed their necessities in the trunk of a Miata. Had the car shipped to Maui and rented a small furnished apartment.
They only left a handful of things with their kids - most of which have since been shredded or trashed. It goes to show that you really don't need all that E36 M3 that you own.
As far as furniture, I think we only brought beds and dressers with us. Beds because ours were all new enough, and dressers because they are easy to move and contain stuff already. Nothing to pack, nothing to unpack.
Other than that we shed stuff like crazy. I learned that I wasn't going to get a 2.5 car garage in my price range so I sold off MUCH of my garage. I knew I'd keep my tool box and tools, and my air compressor.
I then figured out how much each cubic foot of space in the trailer was costing me. Armed with that knowledge I looked at everything in the garage, measured it and calculated how much it would cost me to move that thing. If it was too heavy to stack on other things that was taken into account. If it had an uneven top surface or couldn't otherwise have stuff stacked on top of it, that was taken into account. I then knew much much it would cost me to ship something. If I could purchase it down here for close to that figure, I sold it and repurchased it down here (most everything I have I've purchased used, so this is VERY duable).
I funded the move 100% with stuff that was sold from the garage. Most of that I haven't replaced as I've switched to woodworking at my main hobby now.
