Yeah, I like it. It's a little "Lord of the Flies," and I have no doubt that it has potential to be abused by disgruntled fellow members, but this way it removes the possibility that an impartial mod might get her period and go all nuts.
Peace out, this is my good bye to most of the board, and my good riddance to choice special snowflakes. And HTFU snowflakes, to use your own preferred terminology/attitude. No one ever promised you fairness.
Wait, what? Are you leaving the board, or is the entire forum getting nuked?

This gets my vote. It's your board, so if you don't like someone just ban them. You could do temporary bans at first and if the behavior returns, then go for the perma ban.
Bingo, if people want to endlessly argue about stupid crap they can go do it on reddit.
Speaking of reddit, I like the downvote idea, go past -5 or so and the post collapses or gets deleted entirely.
I'm leaving. Y'all stay and keep having fun. Just isn't for me anymore.

I'm sorry to see you go. You were a welcome moderation force who will be sadly missed. At least GRM will soldier on.
Wau, we broke the rules-lady.
TBH, my enjoyment of the free-for-all yet very informative nature of this forum is the main reason I subscribe to the magazine, the recent crackdowns seemed more overbearing than effective.

No reason why it would have to be. It's just a setting.
I knew that. I was just trying to solicit any response to determine if I was in coventry already.

If you think it will soldier on with the same guidance and feel, I fear that you're in for a rude awakening. I like it here, the filter that we have knowing that it's not a place that we can swing from the chandelier keeps it nice. We wipe our feet off when we enter the door, take off our hats and always wear a shirt. As much as I enjoy everyone, letting the inmates run the asylum would not be a good thing. It'd slowly but surely deteriorate to animal house. The fear of double secret probation in the back of our minds isn't a bad thing, it keeps us upstanding citizens and separates us from the likes of most model or brand specific forums. You all fear absolute power corrupting absolutely, you've been spoiled by this relative utopian corner of the digital world. Moderating anywhere is a thankless job, and here it's done in such a soft spoken manner that we have multiple threads regarding how we should be policed. And more often when people leave or take a break it's own their own as they're tired of dealing with crap, political debate and costas-like behavior, not because of the ban hammer. The community on here needs to grow up, grow a pair, put on their collective big boy pants and pull up their socks. Some of the behavior and attitude displayed when the topic of self restraint is mentioned showcases an immature response that is not our finest moment.

In reply to Gary:
simple rule, unless it involves the cost of a part or project, would you say it around SWMBO? They get and understand your humour at it's best, otherwise they wouldn't be with you, if they're going to groan or shake their head think, is it something that I'd say at work with someone from HR present. If you get two no's, then you have your answer. Self restraint isn't rocket surgery.
90% of people's problems on here, myself included, seem to be self inflicted and they allow it to consume them and over complicate their lives.

Boy, if I followed that, I'd be in a lot of trouble. SWMBO is far worse than I am in some ways.

Or, since the Exxon thread has been released from captivity (to my dismay), is it open season again?
In reply to keethrax:
those with SWMBO'ed who are nurses or named Amy need not apply said rule of thumb.

if you're asking that, take a step back for a second and see what we've gone through today. Wade into the water, heed the warning of the posted signs that prohibit diving, the water is shallow, don't splash the other swimmers, and definitely don't pee in the pool
COME ON PEOPLE!
This E36 M3 is ridiculous.
Gameboy knew damn well what the reaction to his thread title and topic was going to be. We all knew without a shadow of a doubt how that was going to play out and so did he. The first three or four responses should have been enough to warn everyone of the impending doom. Some people just can't resist a good argument. He knew that there are people here who don't believe that Exxon is evil. Don't believe that climate change is anything more than a natural occurrence. And are willing to argue about it. He knew that going in, and he also should have known that inciting such a response with a very loaded thread title was off limits.
It's trolling plain and simple.

She opened it again because some people couldn't wash the sand out of their cracks, and pitched a bitch about it.
Instead of being spoon fed what's right and wrong, how about we all try to act like we're old enough to be licensed drivers?

I don't, personally, think it was particularly inconsistent. But this is pointless and the damage is done, so I'm just not going to belabor it any further.

So you're saying that everyone on this forum should get arrested for peeling out of a Dairy Queen?

I disagree. We are the hive mind. We are the hub of automotive knowledge. Readers have built everything from a garage to a functioning sucker car. This type of widespread ingenuity is why GRM does, and will continue to exist. Above all that, however, is what we stand for. We are the DIY ethos incarnate. We have respect, dignity, and tolerance. If you think the Exxon thread was an E36 M3 show, you should see the drama that occurs on other forums. We come together no matter what, so we can do what other believe is impossible, or just not worth the time. We buy cars, save cars, build cars, and race cars. Sometimes we wreck a few, but that's okay. Learning is learning. There will always be trolls, flounders, and canoes on the internet, and it is our job to rise above adversity and set an example for all to follow. GRM, continue to be excellent to each other. You are the best forum on the internet, and it is your duty not to let this humble corner of cyberspace to fall by the wayside.
