Seriously,
Roav is selling their entry level camera for $43, down from $55 and it's on prime so free 2 day shipping.. so if you don't already have a dash cam

Serious question - why do I need one? I'm as tech-nerdy as anyone on this board, but I've never heard a convincing argument as to why they are necessary, except in the rare occasion that you're in an accident.

your link is broken.
I've never really needed my dash cam, but I've never gotten in an accident. I've seen too many videos where people lie, and the dash cam saves them from charges/insurance premiums. I have a bunch of road rage/strupid driver clips I save for the hell of it. One day I plan on making a compilation of stupid people.

so my argument is that rare case incident.
i was rear ended last year in traffic. didnt carry collision coverage on the miata. woman who hit me claimed i moved over and cut her off. which wasnt true. i had been in the lane for a mile..
her insurance sided with her and I got screwed.
a dash cam would have given me evidence to the contrary of what she said.
that's why I push them hard now.
I wish I could clip it on the back side of my onstar GM mirror and tap into its power supply and never touch it unless needed.

You would talk different if you were in Mother Russia, Imperialist.
But yeah, I don't have a dashcam, either. More interested in a GoPro, to be honest.
Anyone here actually have this model? Ive been meaning to get one for a long time and considering this one

I mean, you could say the same thing about a seatbelt or a fire extinguisher.

Yeah, but a dashcam isn't a safety item.
Here's a channel that will get you thinking more about buying one. Updated often with many domestic US videos. Frustrating stuff.
I wish they had them back in the 80s. My very first accident was with an older gentleman who tried to pull a left turn out of a right turn only exit from a mall. I broadsided his brand new buick right in the A pillar with my fiat spider. He claimed I swerved into him. Cops sided with him over 18 year old long haired me.
I keep thinking about getting one, especially with towing a boat up and down the mid-atlantic coast.

My dashcam has come in handy a few times already. Once when the cops approached me because someone had reported me as driving dangerously (and I was able to prove that I had not) and once when I was accused of rear ending someone and once when I caught someone doing something really funny and was able to share on social media. I can tell you that I have a lot more instances when I wish I had a dash cam.
There’s another discussion on here about the ROAV C1 that is recommended. I’m curious how these two compare.

I was thinking about that. If you screwed up, id be hiding that camera real quick.
In reply to TJL :
Sometimes you don’t know you screwed up, and sometimes you may not be conscious or clear thinking enough to know to hide it.
I recently had an accident that totaled my vehicle. The officer asked if I had a dash cam. I didn’t, but if I did it would have been fraudulent to lie to the officer.
I was disoriented. There is no way I could have known to hide the thing, and no way I could have found the darned thing in the wreckage.
Everyone assumes the dash cam will prove their innocence. 50% of them are wrong.
These are valid points about a dash cam verifying your own responsibility for a crash.
If I caused the wreck, then I deserve what I get.
However, the last wreck I was in, it was the other driver's fault yet I got the citation because I turned in front of her before she ran a stop sign.
That hurts a lot more.

True. Neither is insurance.
Again, apples and oranges. Insurance is legally required.
I just ordered one of these. I'm fortunate enough that if I go my whole life never needing it, my dying thought won't be "Man, I wish I still had the $43 I spent on that dash cam."
I may never need the jumper cables, air compressor, jump box, tools or first aid kit I keep in my car, either. But I like having them there.

Are you saying that because this is a good one, or because it's cheap, or?
