Interesting and perhaps ironic that AAA Maryland jumps in to support peoples right to go slow in the left lane while AAA Southern California sponsors NASCAR races. 
I thought it was bizzare, because this is the same AAA that's been vocal about not riding the left lane, and has been a supporter of the bills to make it illegal to ride the left lane.

Not at all. If she wasn't breaking the law, then they were protecting her rights, even if by policy they don't agree with the law. Working to change the law is a different arguement for them.
I like to read about this happening. Alas, on my commute all the lanes are packed, and moving out of the left lane means you're behind a pokey box van/truck of some kind.
I try to tell myself that keeping up with the fastest traffic in the left lane makes it OK but I still feel guilty sometimes.

That's what was so weird, the AAA rep I heard wasn't saying anything about the lack of a clear law. He was going on about how it isn't dangerous, isn't a problem, etc. Like it's wonderfull to have left hand lane hogs.
MD driver since 1976 here.
In a 30 mile radius of DC, there is precisely zero awareness that any lane on any highway has any particular use. I drive from Chevy Chase to Gaithersburg and back 3-4 times a week for work. I typically experience this:
I'm driving in the #3 lane at between 65-70 (55mph speed limit) and using the #4 (left) lane for overtaking. A car, typically with the driver on the phone, will catch up to me, and rather than passing on the left, will assume a spot 2 lengths behind me. They will not pass on the left. Ever.
I signal and move over one lane.
They either do the same, continuing to follow me too closely, or stay in the #3 lane where they either...
Speed up to the next car to follow too closely, or stay behind me, one lane to my left.
I keep score some days of passed on left/passed on right. Right in MD is like 12:1. The left lane is often empty on 270 as no one wants to stick their neck out and get lasered by the MD State Troopers.
Awhile ago, I was on my home from visiting my daughter. I'm on a three lane road. Sunday night, usually everyone is in a hurry to get home from skiing or snowmobiling. Right hand lane is usually pretty empty. So I went there, set the cruse on 65, the speed limit. Had the most relaxing drive home in a long time.

Leaving Atlantic City on the AC Expressway.. is three lands. I often stay in the far right lane and speed past everyone as people almost automatically move to the centre lane and leave the right right one devoid of traffic till you hit the tollbooth at Mile marker 5
The Far left lane is where most of the speed demons live. I do five over in the far right and usually pass all the MLMs
the only problem with using the rt lane to make good time is trying to move to the left/middle to allow merging traffic ... which usually takes a mile or two to get up to speed

By driving in the right lane not only do you make it seem as though you are driving slower than traffic and sometimes creating a shield for yourself (with middle lane traffi), but you also take full advantage of the doplar effect. When you consider that a standard US lane is 12ft. Wide and the shoulder is 10ft. wide., this makes a substantial difference in the speed NJ's finest reads on their LIDAR gun.

Umm, doppler on Lidar? Not nearly the effect on radar. And they are pointing it at YOU so they have a better idea of what is causing the signal unlike radar which has such a wide beam that the officer has to make a judgement call about which vehicle caused the reading he is seeing. It's the reason they have to actively look through a scope to use LIDAR and can sit passively while using RADAR.

That's why I drive a Volvo. When I had a BMW, everyone expected me to speed. Now that I have a Volvo, nobody expects me to go fast
