Five Guys. Cajun fries. They kind of win by default, since no In-N-Out around here. Legitimately great burgers, though. My kids even like the place. And the peanuts are a nice touch.

Grew up in SoCal, live in TN now, so I've been to both plenty of times. No contest.
Of the two, I'd take the Five Guy. Their fries are polarizing, but I fall in the "love 'em" camp on that matter.
If you're in SoCal, do yourself a favor and check out Habit Burger. Good enough I can't believe it hasn't been mentioned yet.
There was a Habit where I lived in NorCal, never made it there. Smashburger and In n Out won that battle. I just don't like going to 5 guys, burger, fries, drink 12 bucks is just too much if that drink isn't beer. Smashburger has made it's way to the Pittsburgh area though, I haven't been to any out here. Burgatory comes highly recommended as well.
I know I posted In n Out earlier, but really, I'm disappointed with burgers anytime I go out for them. Nothing beats homemade. Not always an option, but back in my younger days when we'd ride around all day, we kept a grill and some charcoal in the car, just stop and cook wherever.
Except maybe Fatburger. The ultimate hangover cure, there was one in the casino like 5 minutes from my house for a while.
In-N-Out all day long.
Somebody mentioned Fuddruckers a couple of pages ago. I go that way- un-adulterated beef with mountains of fresh toppings that can accidentally create a side salad.
Five guys is pretty good. Never been to an In-n-out.
I say 'psh' to your big-name burger chains. I go to a locally-owned, locally-sourced artisan hipster burger joint to get my fix.
(Also they have a choice of like four different veggie burger patties and you can get any of their burger options done veggie. Shut up and take my money.)

we just got a burgerville at the Borgata. I thought it was a made up name, not a chain. Can't say I am a fan.
In and Out for me. I like The Habit more, but it appears to be mainly out west.
No in-n-out here, but I do drive out of my way to go to 5-guys. They smash everything else in Louisville.
Smashburger? Really? If you have mentioned that as an answer, we now know you're culinary sense can't be trusted.
I've never been to 5 guys and didn't try In-N-Out when I was in California last year.
If I want a burger I go to 1 of 2 local places. One is a really awesome steakhouse that does specials on their burgers Mon/Tues, or a pub down the street from it.
I think the conversation began with fast food burgers. The $10 steakhouse burger made with trimmings from t-bones and NY strip steaks is in a different league.
Smashburger near our house I have tried just a couple times. Food tastes good but I think its pretty overpriced for what you get. I leave hungry and feel like I paid too much.
No In and out here.
Fast food style I usually like Wendys but their prices have been creeping up, its hard to get out of there for much under ten bucks.
Five Guys are pretty good. I have not been there in a while.
There is a local chain called Fosters Grille that I really like. When they are good (usually are) they are really good, but I have had a mediocre burger there too.
This place has popped up locally recently as part of a growing chain. Pretty darn good and alot of food for the money. It's slowly becoming my go to place
I didn't know Fudruckers was still around. We had one but it closed years ago.

Me neither. They were the rage in the 80's and early 90's, then they went downhill and closed a bunch. I was surprised to learn they are building a new one near me.

They just opened a new one in our area a few months ago after a long absence. We had two or three that closed up about 5 years ago. Tried the new one last week and it was delicious!
Where else can you get a 2/3 or 1 lb burger and chili cheese wedge fries that you can load with pico de gallo, jalapenos and gobs of melted cheddar pump cheese. 
Never had a good experience at Fuddruckers.
Never had an in and out burger either.
Five Guy's is good.
A couple new ones I had never heard of prior to moving to Texas is whataburger and jack in the box. Neither one are anything special really.
Had In-and-Out when visiting California, none around here. 5 Guys here. If given the choice and both available would depend on how hungry I am. 5 Guys for the larger burger when hungry, In-and-Out when less hungry for smaller burger. I think there are three 5 Guys around here. One Steak and Shake. Not really that impressed with them. There's also a newer starter chain around here called Smashburger. Burger is between 5 Guys and In-and-Out size wise and has pretty good seasoned fries. Love me some good burgers but unfortunately not on the menu very often because of diet restrictions. Pre-diabetic diet.
A little while after our Fudruckers closed we got a Red Robin. It wasn't bad but I refuse to go back after a disagreement of what constitutes bottomless fries. If you bring out a handful at a time you're going to be making a lot of trips.

Red Robin fries are only good when they're hot and crispy, so you only want them in little batches. Make the waiter keeping running. And try them with the campfire sauce that comes with the onion rings.

I went last night. The Double is pretty tasty, but at almost $8.00 for a combo I think I'll stick with either our local joints or Five Guys.

Around here Cookies or Squeeze Inn have them both beat
Cookies does not have a website, I don't think they even take credit cards.
What we're seeing here is a clash of cultures.
For some, a burger is all about the quality of the patty and the bun. The essentials. Good beef, properly cooked and a nice fresh bun are what matters.
For others, it's about what's on it. Sauces, toppings, etc. This is what makes or breaks the burgers. The "best burger in SF" I had a while back fell in this group. Anytime you see egg as a potential topping, you know you're in a heavily accessorized burger joint.
And there are those who simply go for price per pound. We'll ignore them.
I'm in the first camp. I'm all about the meat and the bun.
