Ok,so I bought my daughter a used iPod today. I was able to move the songs from the ipod onto my computer, but now I want to wipe the iPod clean and add songs my daughter wants. How the heck do I do this? When I connect it I get the message about 'this ipod is connected to another iTunes library'
How do I break that connection and make it connected to mine?

Ok, so far I've got the music off the new to me iPod and into iTunes. At this point, the stupid thing starts syncing when I plug it in. I want to pick and choose what songs sync. Any ideas?

Click "manually manage music" somewhere in the ipod sync settings. Then drag and drop.

you can restore the ipod through itunes to wipe it to factory. If it is an older Ipod use software called sharepod for transferring files easily.

Figured it out. Tommy, I couldn't do that (at that point at least) because the thing would start syncing immediately. then I read that you hold option and command when you plug it in. Then it'll connect, but not sync. Then I could finally click that manually manage music. man, that's great! Then it just acts like an external hard drive. I'm going to do that with our iPod Touch and my iPhone! So much easier.

Thanks Tom and Slopecarver for your help.
