For the record, I have no political interest left or right in the topic, nor was I particularly offended. I do have a background in PR and writing for public presentations and speeches...that was my only interest in the topic, purely academic. Thanks to xflowgolf, Margie and the rest of the un-flame responses. To the flamers, get outside yourself!

Well, I can't claim much credit for taking the question seriously. The high school I referenced was in Sanford, Fla.--a place that was then, and apparently still is now, the site of some serious racial tensions--so I have had ample opportunity to wonder at what makes people choose sides based on something as seemingly trivial as skin color.

Oh man, that reminds me of my ex-wife... I can't stand those damn words. Ugh!
I live in the wrong geo-social quadrant to understand what that means.
Its Appalachian for "you all" that starts here in North Georgia and winds its uneducated sounding ass up to Pennsylvania.

Well. Sort of. "Ya'll" is "You all." "Yuns" usually refers to a smaller group, like a group of siblings, husband and wife, in some instances, one in the same.

To the OP: Sorry man. I'll take the stick out of my ass. The original original post came off as "DID YOU HEAR WHAT ROMNEY'S WIFE SAID!?" To me. My bad.

And to answer your question, I wouldn't have picked up on it, and I very seriously doubt there is a group of Ricans that is genuinely "offended" by what she said. Now, had she been speaking to a big group of black folks and said "THEY GONNA PUT YA'LL BACK IN CHAINS," I can see where a proverbial nutkick would be in order.

Po' Folks was apparently deemed not P.C. so they changed the restaurant name to just "Folks". Never figured that one out.

Po' Folks is not PC? Huh. My dad's speed shop chain was called Po Boy Speed Shop.

According to my file "you people" and "folks" are both very offensive, as well as "kids", "junkies" and "boys". As much as everyone likes to bash unions they did keep folks from becoming a 10 day vacation. Most surprising was that junkies had feelings and could send complaints.

If you're keeping score add "them" and "helper monkey" even when refering to a helper monkey ie: "Her helper monkey pooped on the farebox"

Yet you can go down to New Orleans and order a "Po' Boy" just about anywhere and not have a problem. It's usually on the menu!

I have no idea what's going on here, but some of the convo above reminded me of something I need to tell the people of the North East/Mid-Atlantic region. The plural of "you" is still "you". YOUS IS NOT A berkeleyING WORD!!!!!

If I turn to a black guy, and start to tell him about "you people", yeah... then it can be legitimately taken as offensive, since one guy did one thing and I am applying it to "his people", who are only "his people" because they are black too. I am actually doing something racist/ignorant.

If I am addressing a room full of people, the word you means not me, and the word people means humans... I mean all the other humans in the room. Not racist one bit, it just triggers you brain because it sounds like something a racist said... But at that point its your job to be smart enough to understand words.

Put it this way... If I as a stranger came to your new years eve party to hang out with you and your friends and had a great time I may say "Man, you guys really know how to party... back home we just sit around and watch the ball drop on TV" This is obviously not racist right? But if I had referred to you as "people" instead of "guys" it would have been? Doesn't really make sense.

The phrase "you people" is racist because it can be used to generalize and cast stereo types... if it is not used in that way, it is not racist... your just looking for opportunities to be offended.

A true story that can now be partially told: a friend of mine in programming/S&P once showed me two identical mail bins full of letters from the public. One was all from science enthusiasts saying they hated the show because "that's not how evolution really works!" (which is true), and the other from fundamentalists outraged that evolution was "in a show for children".

He asked what he should do, I told him to look at the ratings. If they were good, burn both boxes.
