WTF was the car driver doing?!?

He was either doing warp speed when he came over the horizon or waited way too long to get on the brakes. Maybe even both.

I would have been hard on the brakes and aiming behind that Lexus at least from the point where the video switches back to the forward-facing bus-cam.

Seems like the typical driver doing the half-ass glance before pulling out. Having multiple close family members as avid riders makes me look closely before pulling out or changing lanes. Unfortunately I am in the minority on the road

It's Florida. She was leaving Bessie's for tea and headed to Bingo. No need to look, everyone here drives really slow!

Yeah, the bike was whistling.

I wonder what the speed limit on that stretch of road was. Not that anyone here pays attention to such things....

I wonder if the car was going to do a u-turn to the left to pick up that kid that just got off the bus.

I think the fish eye perspective of the camera might make it look like he was going faster than he was. The article says the other driver was at fault.

Yeah now that I look at it, he was only going a little faster than the white car was at the beginning of the vid.

Which just means he almost made "That guy in the Lexus wouldn't dare do that, I'm not slowing down!" his last thoughts.

motorist either doesn't know where they're going and starts pulling out to go right, then decides to go left, then stops, OR they just gave up when they saw the bike coming and stopped in the road. either way, kid was lucky he decided to eject instead of ride the bike into the car, could have been a lot worse.

as a motorcyclist of 30+ years I take a pretty hard line on this sort of thing.

"If you ride into the side of a car, it's your own goddamn fault"

...You're invisible. Assume no one can see you yet everyone is still actively trying to kill you. Keep your eyes as high as possible, assess every threat, cover your brakes and have a escape plan always. If there's a moving vehicle anywhere in front of you, be prepared for them to try to kill you.

I lost a co-worker this way last year. Everyone at work was all "OMG you must be so upset!" and I'm all "Yes, I'm berkeleying furious that he didn't listen to the 20 times I gave him the "you are invisible" speech, was looking at a point about 2 seconds in front of him, didn't have a plan, and berkeleying target fixated on the side of the car and rode straight to his death".

Thanks for that. I'm a relatively new motorcyclist, but I've been a driver for over three decades. I think there would be a lot fewer "accidents" if all drivers thought a little like that. Certainly, on a bike, it's pretty much the only way to stay alive.

Saw that on ESPN in the break room at work.

^What I said up there^ - seriously.

  • Look as far ahead as possible, all the time. If there's any one thing that gives you an edge, this is it.

  • If there's a vehicle, moving or not in that very big field of view, plan what you need to do to avoid them when they try to kill you. If they don't, don't worry - the other ones will.

  • In every intersection be to the right or left of center in a middle lane (out of the oily center), cover the front brake, and lift a little.

  • An oncoming car can U-turn at any time. A car in any lane can U-turn at any time.

  • At stop lights once stopped, watch your mirrors and pulse your brake light 'til the car behind you is stopped. Then make sure they're not going to be rear-ended and in turn, flatten you. I generally stay far to the left pointed in between the cars and in gear 'til a few cars behind me have stopped.

  • Never, ever ride passively. Passive riders have abdicated control. You absolutely have to ride 100% sharp and active, 100% of the time.

  • Riding in traffic in urban centers isn't fun. It's a challenge. Even on a supermoto you're working to stay alive the entire time.

Looking at this video, the first thing I notice is a stopped school bus unloading a passenger. I don't know about Florida, but here in NC drivers are required to stop for a school bus unloading students. The bus would have flashing red lights and a stop sign sticking out. In the video, the student appears to be crossing in front of the bus. If we assume the stop sign is still extended and the red lights are flashing. If the law and procedures are the same in Florida, I would think the Lexus driver was pulling onto the road to wait for the school bus to start moving. If he saw the motorcycle he had a reasonable expectation the motorcycle would also stop for the bus. Seeing how hard the motorcycle hit the car, I doubt the Golden Bear's grandson was going to be stopping for the school bus. Seems to the motorcycle caused the accident but didn't get ticket due to some other reason. Maybe the officer was a football or golf fan? Regardless, sucks that it happened and good the student didn't get clobbered by the flying parts.

Bus is a city bus, not a school bus, different rules.

Yeah, sorry. It appears some canoes are sunk now.

Like Motorman, I have 30+ years of riding, no issues. I know some that ride with the high beam on during the day.

All I can say about the video is I wasn't there. What kind of experience did the young man have? How much room was there between the bus and the front of the car? (escape route). What was behind the car? (escape route). Did he have enough time or skill to just lay the bike down and skuff the leathers?

It could have ended differently in any option.

Dan

Crap! Totally missed that it was a city bus. Since the kid was getting off I thought it was a school bus. I take back all I said. Guess I need to pay better attention.
