This is a pretty sobering mini documentary.

http://www.boingboing.net/2010/10/25/japans-suicide-fores-1.html

I watched this last night. I am kind of a morbid person but this hit me on a different level. It does have some footage of a skeleton and a few blurred body photos. But the message is pretty powerful. Such a beautiful forest, such a sad place.

That ridiculous show Destination Truth on SyFy (It should still be SciFi, damnit!!!) went there once. Definitely a strange, strange place. They found an abandoned camp site there with notes and photos everywhere, presumably from a dead visitor.

it is a strange place. From what I understand, because of the lava flows.. things like compasses and the like do not work too..

Does Japan still have super high suicide rates?

I know it's wrong but did anyone catch the worst product placement in a documentary ever in there? That suicide skeleton only had one key on him. Toyota - The only car that will actually bore you to death.

and the abandoned car was some Nissan 5spd suv thing. A bad day for japanese car endorsements...

That couldn't have anything to do with the fact that it happened in Japan, could it?

They need to incorporate more of those wacky/humiliating asian pranks into the suicide patrols...

I don't know. If it was shot here in the states there's a good chance the two cars 'featured' would still be a Toyota and a Nissan.

Creepy. Hopefully the japanese tourists visiting the redwoods don't get any ideas.

The japanese have a disaffected young population and appartently they like to kill themselves. Not too long ago it was people would lock themselves in a van with a charcoal stove going or toxic gas mixture to off themselves. Very strange, I wonder if japanese culture has something to do with it.

I bet this is a direct result of Bukkake, squid porn and Japanese game shows. I'm not sure how... but anything that berkeleyed up has to take its toll.
