(Thought he was worthy of a thread of his own)
Just bought two tickets to see him in Cincinnati in September. I saw him in 1989 at a dive place in nowhere VA in the Navy, right up front. Best show I have ever seen. Surfing with the Alien is one of 3 CD's I would want on a desert island.
I tried to do the back-stage meet/greet VIP thing, but $275 is out of my league, even for Joe. $150 yes, not $275 (x2 for SWMBO).
He's amazing.
Also: I thought he had died when I saw the thread.
I kinda dig the virtuosos guys in the same way that I kinda like F1.
OTOH, If I'm just out driving, or wrenching in the shop, or doing any kind of "soundtrack" activity, give me some normal rock and roll like Social D, Sound Garden, Foo Fighters, etc. Satriani, Vai, etc. just feel like I'm in an art museum when I'd really rather just hang at a car show.

Me too. Whew!
+2!
So far, the only one of the 'virtuoso types' I've seen is Steve Morse at some guitar showcase event back around 1991 or something. I think he had just started using Ernie Ball guitars and a store I went to often was a dealer and had an extra ticket.
John Petrucci. That's all.

That's how I've always felt as well (except I like F1).
It always feels like writing a decent song takes a back seat to playing wicked solos. I can appreciate it, just not my thing.

Every once in a while, someone comes along and changes your idea of what a man can do with a guitar. For me Satriani was that guy.

Satriani and Petrucci were diaper-dumping when this guy was performing.

Actually Satriani is older than Chastain.

Petrucci is younger than Chastain by 4 years
The man can play, that is all you will get from me. It's been 10years since my surfing with the alien CD was stolen from my car, and I can still pick out his music whenever I hear it. (even though admittedly I don't actively listen to his stuff anymore)

I think I've missed a few recent albums/CDs/whatever the kids call it these days. But I have most on CD, MP3 or both. He has Steve Morse opening for him, and I have to admit I have no idea who that is. Google tells me he plays for Deep Purple. Ok.
The original G3 tour with Joe, Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson must have been insane.

I dug him in the Surfing With The Alien era. Moved on from shred/technical stuff by the early 90's.
I respect him, though.

Hell... it's possible he took lessons from Satriani... just about every other 80's shredder did.
Those guys are pretty good. I'm surprised no one has mentioned this guitarist yet...

I didn't know they were that close in age.
Chastain graduated from the same high school as I did and only a couple years before me. He was a roommate of a good friend and I followed his rise in the Atlanta rock scene pretty closely. He may have had some early lessons but for the most part he was self-taught.
Chastain and Tommy Strain performed some awesome jams on-stage and in practice.
Edit: Don't trust Wikipedia
It has Chastain's birthdate in 1963 and that's off by at least a decade.
