True American hero. That guy cheated death on numerous occasions. he was 95 and is survived by his wife who is 96.

It's also kind of shocking how much Ed Harris really did look like him in The Right Stuff. I was reading about him last night and thought that I was looking at a photo from the movie, when it was actually him.

DOH. What are the odds of two space pioneers from the 1960s making news in the same month?

I was just reading Glenn's career summary ... talk about a guy making ya feel like you don't amount to much... engineer, pilot, instructor, 200+ combat missions in 2 wars, test pilot... full bird USMC colonel BEFORE he went to NASA. Hero spaceman and Senator were like icing on a pretty good cake.

Every aspect of his life was worthy of emulation. We were lucky to have had him.

Godspeed, John Glenn.

Even in its last few weeks 2016 finds a way to make one more thing worse. Glenn was a hero and a good person that everyone could to look up to. We need more of those.

I know it's redundant here, but it's the best way to describe John Glenn: He was a great American hero with tremendous accomplishments throughout his life. There's been a lot of discussion and a fair amount of controversy about who qualifies as a "hero" these days. The accolade is thrown around rather loosely. But there's no debate about John Glenn being a hero. This country indeed needs more people like him.

These guys volunteered to quite literally put their asses on the line to be crash test dummies for humanity.

I don't like throwing around the "hero" word either, but this guy clearly qualifies.

Some thoughts from the man:

.

“I guess the question I'm asked the most often is: "When you were sitting in that capsule listening to the count-down, how did you feel?" Well, the answer to that one is easy. I felt exactly how you would feel if you were getting ready to launch and knew you were sitting on top of two million parts -- all built by the lowest bidder on a government contract.”

― John Glenn

.

“There is still no cure for the common birthday.”

I think you could drop American from that. John Glenn was a hero of Earth. I grew up in the shadow of the space race and those men who made it happen are greater heroes to me than any man who ever won a medal of honor fighting in the squabbles of mankind. I am moved by his passing in a way I did not expect at my age. He and his peers were the embodiment of my childhood dreams. They have no corollary in our modern world. They did incredible, brave, stupid things in the name of progress because they could. I am somewhat drunk tonight in mourning for my childhood dreams. And John Glenn. RIP.
