Range Rover keys are over $300 each for some models. Does that help?

Makes me glad I drive a Buick. The keys for it were $5 each after the wife lost the only set, and the dealer had to cut new ones from the vin number.

Yep, but mine are real fancy looking & heavy & "communicate with the vehicle". Hope to hell I don't lose them.

It's not just the Urpeen cars with those megabux keys. The Avalons with the little square 'remote' are ~$290 apiece. I guess I will still be a Luddite. By the way: Mercedes has decreed that no one outside of a dealership can program keys or replace certain other 'theft sensitive' items such as alarm controllers, instrument panels, engine controllers etc. That's retroactive; if you have, say, a 1999 model with that big key off to the dealership with you if the key quits or gets lost. Or if you have one of those 'sidewinder' keys, same thing. They will not supply a key code over the phone, either.

Lots of people complain that their car will never lock the drivers door. Here's the deal: there is a 'proximity' setting which will, when turned on, automatically unlock the drivers door when you get within 15 feet of the car. That way if someone's following you in a parking garage etc you can jump in the car quickly and lock the doors.

So you get out, hit the button and all 4 doors lock. After the system 'times out' (IIRC it's 90 seconds) it enables that feature so that when you come back bada bing the door unlocks when you get close so the car is doing exactly what it's designed to do. Nobody reads the damn owners' manual any more.
