I received a gift card to Jos. A. Bank quite a while ago (California law prohibits them from ever expiring) and I've been concerned that they may file for bankruptcy as very few people need dress cloths, let alone a suite, right now. I mean, work from home - weddings postponed - funerals canceled, etc. Anyway, Men's Warehouse (Jos. A. Bank's parent company) filed for bankruptcy over the weekend.
I'm kinda' hosed as the only thing I buy from them is their 10% cashmere, travelers dress slacks...I seriously doubt my employer is going to give two E36 M3's about me dressing nicely until mid next year at the earliest and my weight could change enough in that time to cause an issue.
So, keep an eye on the health of any company (private or public) you've got gift cards with.
Time to explore their socks, underwear, and belts?
I hate gift cards. Give the person cash. Informal? berkeley it, who cares. Cash is king.
Last time I bought a suit there I got hosed in alterations. Normally alterations are free when you buy but if you buy on sale they charge you a hefty sum for them. I ended up buying the suit for under a hundo and paying twice that for the adjustments.
I think gift cards are stupid. Lazy people who can't be bothered with shopping for a gift and somehow feel that if they force the recipient to shop at a particular store/restaurant that it's somehow more personal than giving cash. I'd much rather have the cash. Or a useless whatzit that I will forever associate with you.
The issue with cash is that some people, like me, will end up using it for everyday expenses for the family.
A gift card prevents that from happening, so I use it for something I want, but wouldn't normally buy myself.
Yup, I got burned when the local indoor kart track went out of business a few years back.

I was about to ask if you'd rather have socks. But as an adult, yeah, berk yeah, I'd like socks.
In reply to No Time :
The flip side is that no blow dealers or hookers that I know of take gift cards.

I started buying suits and in this case I take them to a local tailor until they closed shop. Then I find another far away tailor. Hart Schaffer and Marx has a tent sale and I got some nice $199 suits but I used my own tailor.

But apparently they are the currency of choice for paying scam artists

Gift cards are just like cash but less useful.

The jumbo packs of socks and underwear at Target work fine for me and I can get the better part of a decade out of a belt so...
Besides, the gift card is for $150 so I doubt my dresser could even hold all that stuff.
I wonder if I should just put it on Craig's List for $120 or something.
Jos. A Bank filed chapter 11, they will be 'reorganizing' and closing some stores but it doesn't mean they're going out of business altogether.
