I always tip $5, but it ticks me off a little when there's a $5 delivery charge that i already paid in addition. But $5 either way, unless it's a huge order. Every pizza joint i order from is literally within 2 miles of me anyways, so $5 is pretty generous i'd say.
The place I work at charges $2 for delivery. The driver gets 5% of the total order price for gas for "commission". So on a normal order, $13-15 I get around $.75. It normally isn't a problem but when I deliver to a place in the country with a 20 mile round trip for a $13 order and they don't tip I just used a gallon of gas out of my pocket and got $.65 for it. I think tips should be proportionate to the distance you are from the store.

Absolutely. The farthest away place that will deliver to me is 5 miles away. I don't order from there often, but when i do, if it's still hot when it gets here, he gets a little extra.

Obviously he's a rich banker that never had to work for a living.

Around here I was always told 15%. I think it was this waiter/blogger that said it is now 20%. Uhh....NO! See, the tip percentage does not go up with inflation. The price of the bill goes up, thus the amount I tip (a percentage) goes up as well.
I still think this is all a bunch of crap. If waiters, bartenders, coffee-making chicks, barbers, pizza dude's, THE LADY THAT SITS AT THE CASH REGISTER IN THE CAFETERIA can get tips, why not me???

Should the amount I tip be based on how much they make, or how good the service was?

Oh, here's one thing I do when I get crappy service. I pay with a debit card so there is a line for tip. On that line I'll write something like "terrible service" or something. That way it's clear I didn't forget to tip, I didn't try to skip on on the tip. Those slips go to the manager so they know who and what the issue was. Iv'e only done that twice and both times I did go a tip the bus boy since those tips are for him as well. No sense in him paying for the bad service somebody else provided.

The site never mentions if she was doing a good job or not. A stupidly small tip or no tip at all is perfectly acceptable for a piss poor server.

No no no... they depend on that. It's like a bonus. 10/10 for surveys, 20% tip no matter what for the server. More if they do a good job.

I'm a college student. My tips range from 15%-20% at a restaurant, 5% for really bad service. At a bar, it is $1-3 on the first drink, and $1-2 on the last drink. Coffee servers, etc., don't get a tip unless I have pennies in my change. Pizza delivery drivers typically get $2.00-$3.00.

I really pissed off a delivery driver in a conversation on the internet. I stated that I tip usually $2.50. He said that this was unfair and I was an shiny happy person who deserved to burn in the fiery depths of hell (or something like that). I then reasoned out my argument:
I am already paying a delivery fee of $0.75. Whether or not he gets that money is not my problem (seriously, it is not my problem).
I live 2 mile, round trip, from the pizza place. At a generous cost per mile calculation, that is $0.75. And that is super generous.
With my 1 mile round trip, he will be working for about 10 minutes. So, 1/6 of $8.25 (minimum wage) is $1.37.

I work that out as I am paying for his effort (1/6 of an hour of minimum wage), for his gas (cost per mile) and then an extra fee on top of it. $2.15, so I'm actually giving an extra $.035! He lit into me, insulting me, and threatening me. I asked him to state why I was wrong, and he just continued insulting me.

I'm gonna keep with my $2.50 tip. Unless I don't have enough money for it, then they get a beer or two depending on what kind I have.

Server can think what they like. I tip 15% if they do their job right. Only more if something happens out of the ordinary and they respond in some great way. Only less if they really do a bad job. 15% is plenty. That was always the "standard" as far as I knew. I don't think they get to decide that all of a sudden it's more.

As someone who had bonuses (stolen tips, really) that depended on these scores, I will say that there is some basis behind this. When everybody gives out 9-10's, and then someone comes along and says well, they were pretty damn good, but not perfect because nobody can be, I'm giving them an 8... Well, it hurts your average and hurts your pay.

That's piss poor service in my mind. I wouldn't expect a a good tip from a Catholic priest if I insinuated he was a child molester or belittled the pro-life movement.

Sucks to be them then. Shoulda worked harder instead of making me wait 45 minutes before they waddled over to take my order.

In reply to MG Bryan: "Brought up" probably means, was bitching loudly about the 1% the entire time he was at the table.

There is in my situation. We get 10% taken off of all of our pay, and it is put in a pool (tips are not allowed). At the end of two weeks, the scores are put into a formula that averages them and puts weights on them depending on how much you worked. Most people put an average performance at 8, good at 9, and exceptional at 10. There are a few that do it as average at 5, good at 7, and exceptional at 9. That kills the average, killing the bonus, not to mention will get me demoted if the average sinks low enough (unlikely).

I usually tip between 18-20% more if the service was pretty good. One thing that has really pissed me off is a couple a times I have gone to a restaurant with a bunch of friends (more then 8) and they do that automatic tip thing and the waiter or waitress gives piss poor service. Only a couple times I have left no tip but there have been a couple times when I wish I could have.

At the risk of continuing this tangent, I strongly disagree with the statement that giving an undeserved 10 doesn't cost you anything.

Most cases that I am familiar with, it doesn't cost you any money. I'd equate it to 10% tip = 8, 15% = 9, and 20% = 10.

I tip, and usually tip well. If I'm in doubt as to whether someone deserves a tip (like a cable installer or a tree guy), I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and try to tip them anyway. Take out? Tip.

Come to my table with an attitude and sass me through my dinner? Yeah, you'll probably get a pretty good tip, too. You were probably in a lousy mood because someone from earlier in this thread was your last table. Maybe my generosity will put you in a better mood and the next guy will get better service, and the world will be an overall happier place.

I don't want to live in a world where we're all trying to stick it to each other so hard that everyone's miserable. If it costs me an extra buck or two a couple times a week to put a smile on someone's face, I consider that a worthwhile investment.
