For those who wear kilts more regularly:
Where do you purchase daily wear price/quality kilts?
How do you keep the pleats looking respectable?
My utility kilt is a heavy canvas duck fabric. About the same weight as a carharrt coat, but a much higher thread count so it has a polished cotton look. It is very hard to get a wrinkle.
My dress kilt is 16 oz sheep's wool and I've never really had problems with wool getting creased. I just fold the waist in thirds and hang it on a clip hanger and it stays perfect. Sometimes I will get a wee crease in the back pleats after sitting in a car, but it relaxes after about 5 minutes of standing.
Quality kilts can usually be measured at a Scottish shop and they order it from Scotland. Utility kilts can be ordered online pretty easily.
Sunday go-to-meeting outfit:
A Sunday morning walk in the woods.
Another vote for USA Kilts. Great selection and helpful bunch of people.
And now I'm shopping utility kilts, thanks

Excellent... mwahahahaha!
Have fun!!!
My Black Watch is from Got Kilt and my utility from Damn Near Kilt Em. Very happy with both. The Got Kilt now has very noticeable wear on it after five years and some fraying and pilling, although the pleets still look crisp and fresh. I occasionally hand wash then lay flat to dry being all wool.
I don't know if it's been mentioned, but despite the jokes and presumptions I always wear underwear as I don't wash it every time.
I am Scottish on both sides of my family although I've never chased down my mom's side.
On my dad's side it was a known enough clan that my wife was watching some historical drama and was trying to explain an actor she liked and I told her that it's in my lineage. She was kinda shocked actually.
I've never planned on wearing a kilt but I do drink a lot of scotch and one day wanna visit Islay and drink my way thru it
In reply to kiltexperts :
Do you have waterproof kilts for canoeing?
In 1977-78 I went to the UW (University of Wyoming) at Laramie and a kid on my dorm wing played the bagpipes and would march up and down the hallway in full kilts wailing away on his bagpipes. He was great!!!
My theory is that wearing a kilt is like playing the bagpipes, there might be a right way to do it, or a wrong way, but very few people outside of Scottland can tell the difference.
I own half a dozen kilts. I once got the office manager of a fairly uptight thinktank to officially declare kilts acceptable attire for "casual" Friday. Within weeks there 4-5 guys who were wearing kilts and Hawaiian shirts to the office on fridays. It was pretty Gorious.
