I have been pining for an old Land Cruiser, something with the straight 6 and locking diffs from the early 90's. There are none with less than 150,000 miles anywhere to be found. OK, I can live with that. Pull the engine, complete rebuild, drive another quarter million miles.
But the prices are insane! $10,000 - $15,000 for a vehicle with over 150,000 miles on it? The seats are shot, the suspension is shot, the rockers are starting to rust. $15k?!?
If you want to spend less, you have to accept 275,000 miles or more on the ODO, and still pay $5-$7K! What does the suspension and transfer case look like at 300,000 miles?!? Besides an engine rebuild, it will require a complete overhaul of the suspension.
And if you go any older, they prices skyrocket even more for a "classic" Land Cruiser with 300,000 miles.
I just want to look like the U.N. darnit.
Yeah, they've become big money for decent ones. I've had a couple come across my desk at work. Fully restored ones, especially earlier models, sell for $30-$40k. You can get a rust bucket for $5k, but that's about it.

Did you know that the motor in those land cruisers is the 1FZ, and it makes the 2jz look like a punk bitch?

That many miles on a Landcruiser is no big deal. Treat it as a lower mile vehicle and inspect for the regular stuff. The 93 up is the one with the better engine. Look for one with ABS, those came with the full floater rear axles and a lot came with electric lockers in both axles.
I have a line on a '65 and '67 LC if anybody is interested. One is in resto, the '67 is a solid AZ or western truck w/ a SBC conversion, IIRC.
Landcruisers have the equivalent of an AE86 drift tax on them.
And they really aren't good for anything besides going offroad... which is great, but for most people, it doesn't matter.

FJ62's can still be found for reasonable prices (though way more than what you'd pay for an XJ), but you're not looking at factory lockers with those.
I enjoyed my 62, it won almost every contested 4 way stop it encountered. If I were to buy another Land Cruiser, though, it'd be an FJ55. I think those look great, and for some reason they seem to be the cheapest of the 'Cruisers.
You can get a similarly worn out XJ on Craigslist anywhere in the country for $500. They will go anywhere a Land Rover will go, are more reliable and there are more aftermarket parts available.
Why pick up the crack pipe?

coincidentally, a while back i was helping a coworker/friend hunt one down - i'd say for every 7 or so high-priced ones, we came across 1 that was priced in the 2-3 grand range, that looked to be as good as the high dollar ones.

You want to talk about crack smokin'? How about a $45,000 Wagoneer?

Curse you! May the fleas of a thousand camels infest you wiggly bits! At least you didn't find any in Michigan.
As an owner of an XJ, i would rather have a late i6 Land Cruiser.

I have an XJ, but kind of like the square body suburbans better than the XJ and Land Cruiser. I recently picked up an 89 Suburban (also have a beater 91) it's large, but sure moves well for a big girl.
I'm afraid I don't get Land Cruisers. I really don't get them after I have to drive one, but the pain does fade.

At least the LC can do highway speeds and tow something. The crack addicts who want $20,000 for a Vanagon camper are smoking some wild stuff.
Friend of mine is into that Vanagon scene. He has a very nice burgandy one.. but yes.. he paid silly money for it and would not part with it

I'll never understand that crowd. You could buy a nice Econoline and make twice the camper out of it for half the money people spend on those head cracking water boxer Vanagons.

Unless you can make like Keith, and find a reasonably priced one with a Subaru swap.
