Wow, that's cheap for an EcoDrive - if I weren't on a bracelet-only kick I'd put it on the xmas list myself.

Doesn't necessarily help the OP, but a decent source for watches at a hefty discount can be Sierra Trading Post. Since it's mostly clearances and overstocks you won't always find something you like, but if you do the prices are good to great, depending on the current deal.

This one came from them at well under 50% of MSRP last year:

I love my Seiko automatics, been rocking my Seiko Monster lately. I dig the fact that they're one of the few companies that makes their watches entirely in-house. Rolex being the other that I know of.

A thing on bands vs bracelets that you may already know is that unless the watch has some funky design, most can be swapped out easily as often as you please. You can go from metal to leather to nato canvas in one day if you'd like. Straps can go for as little as $10, perhaps that opens your options up a little more. Happy hunting!

That Victorinox would have been a stellar deal - I'm sorry I missed it!

Just tell me they're still made in Japan, and I'm in.

Broke my heart when I finally had enough dough to buy my first Futaba R/C (Magnum Jr. for my Associated RC12, that should date me!)..and discovered it was made in Korea.

To be assured of a Japanese-made Seiko, you'd have to fork out for a slightly 'higher end' model, basically anything with 'Japan Movement' on the dial. The 7S26 movement used throughout the lower-end range is not Japanese made.

Another good alternative to Seiko and Citizen, is Orient. They're an affordable Japanese brand with in-house movements.

Bump, my Nixon died on my last ski trip. Interested in a couple watches from $80-$150 that I can wear everyday. Needs to be fully submersible (scuba diving) but also nice enough for business meetings. What kind of movements, glass, brands, etc should I look for?
