I am constructing a wrap around bench that will effectively be a three sides of an octagon. Google tells me I need 135 degree interior angle. How do I calculate what angle to cut each piece? It it just half? Excuse the very artistic paint drawing.

yes, but youre kinda wrong - youre speaking in inverses - on one end of the protractor, you end up at 135° (going the long way around). From the other end, you end up only traveling 45°.
You need 2 x 45° angles to make 3 segments cover 90° of sweep. Split each of those in half, and you need a 22.5° angle to form the joint. Most miter saws will have an indent at 22.5° to make that quick work.
Ok I have been staring at this for apparently 40 minutes . So the 22.5 degrees would be measured from the inside edge of each piece?

Realize that the 22.5* angle is measure from the end of the board not from the length of the board. Think like a miter saw.
