Hello, I was curious what the GRM world knew about board boats. I know hardly anything other than that they are good for learners. I've never been on a sailboat but have done a lot of kayaking/canoeing so I know I don't get sea sick. It will be used on freshwater.

Any input is appreciated including links to information and sales.

Thanks
Joshua

By "board boats" do you mean centerboard sailboats?

Can't go much smaller than Mouseboats.

Ok, here's a "Flats Rat" variant with a real sail:

Sunfish. Basic design so good that it has survived the death of several different companies that once produced them.

I'm tempted to call them the Miata of sailboats.

I'd be more tempted to call it the VW Beetle of sailboats.

ROFL! Quoted for truth, though. Perhaps Joshua is looking for a "Beetle" at the moment?

Yeah that's what I mean. Like the little ones where you sit on the boat instead of in it. They have a space for your feet and that's it.

I was on one today! I like them, they are good to take out just yourself, rather than a larger boat which can be harder to sail single handedly. If you tip over really easy to flip back, they are fun when you are leaving heavily, and also sail before a storm. You can move pretty fast.

The sunfish as mentioned above is a good learner boat.

The more race oriented version one man boat is the Laser. Raced around the world. Though much more expensive than a sunfish, a laser is also much faster and more versatile.

Also popular out your way is the one man MC Scow which are also competitively raced.

I learned to sail on a Sunfish, they're low maintenance, very simple to use and are a good time. You will get wet but that's half the fun, particularly on a hot day.

My old college roommate had a C scow, which is similar to the MC scow mentioned above but bigger - they're fast boats and fairly technical, the C needs two people to run it as opposed to the MC which can be sailed by a single person. There's also an E scow and an A scow which are bigger and faster yet, people have water skied behind an E scow.

Watch the trailer.

The A scow is 38 ft of boat with big sails like you would have on a 38ft boat, but...there is minimum boat.
In car terms, it is like putting a truck engine in an economy car frame.

A scow is more like an MG Midget with a twin turbo LS9 in it. Unbelievable fast and hard to handle. I've heard of then hitting 40+ knots.

I have a 16' Hobie Cat. It can be sailed solo. It is much easier to sail with 2 people aboard. The 14' Hobie looks easier to sail solo. They are fast and fun.

I thought maybe he was talking about boats made from boards.

My folks had a row boat at their camp, that each spring we put the boat in the water and let it soak and swell so that it didn't leak. worked that way for years.

Any way, small sailboats are fun.

I wish I felt that I had the athleticism needed to kiteboard or moth.
