I am working on the aerodynamics package of a Formula SAE car. The problem is my school does not have a CFD program. So I am going to try to get a sponsorship from a CFD company in the form of CFD software. Does anyone know any good software? Or have any tips or anything would be appreciated.

Check out solidworks. They gave my team free copies when I was part of it. Solidworks has cosmosworks and floworks for FEA packages.

IIRC the team I was with used Cosmos (solidworks) for most of our stuff. Dont know if it will work too well with wings and stuff though, I never messed with it myself.

IIRC theres a good sponsorship with solidworks and they will cut you a hell of a deal on it.

I have been out of the loop on that for several years though.

(*edit --looks like brotus7 and I were thinking the same thing at the same time)

I use flow works for intake stuff but CFDesign will sponsor just about any FSAE team. It takes a hell of a computer to do get good data though. One intake simulation took 5 hours on the best computer available 2 core i7s and 16gb of ram... I need to run 20 variants of this simulations to get the data I want. That was with flow works, I don't know if CFDesign is any better. What team are you on? How far along is your car?

Solidworks only does internal flow right? We have copies of Solidworks. I will look into the CFDesign. I am on the UAH team. We are actually aiming for 2012. We are fabricating the chassis now. The design will done by the end of the semester. Our problem is we have no money and are having major difficulties finding sponsors.

I remember how the team I was on worked around that.. do a recruiting drive at your schools business college and have them deal with that!

We ended up with more women around that way and it was win-win. Also one of the girls seriously weighed 80lbs and naturally became our acceleration test driver at competition.

Flow works will do external. We have a couple business people on our team that are workin on the computer thing. Sponsorship has been rough the past couple years for everyone. We were literally selling what ever we could at the beginning of last year. Best of luck!
