Software recommendations (windows), hardware (how good of an idea are external mics and headphones as opposed to internals on a laptop?)

Shoutengine seems to get the most publicity from other podcasts who use it.

I don't know anything about mics, but I'm thinking decent external mics are probably the best way to go. The mic will define how good your show sounds.

PM Nsperlo, he does, or did, podcasts. He doesn't post much anymore but comes around occasionally.

Stupid question but how do you go about downloading podcasts?

IMO Blue makes the best inexpensive microphones:

iCE Mic

Yeti Mic

IIRC the Yeti is a very solid mic for the price. Outside of that though, I'm of no use.

Another vote for a blue yeti mic. Mine works great. It's also dynamic so you can set it to be more sensitive in different directions, like if you are interviewing a guy sitting next to you looking at a camera, or across each other on a desk, etc... Very solid. Also it works great with audacity. Worth every penny.
