We made a last minute plan to scoot to Hilton Head with intentions to visit Savannah for good grub and history the 22-27th.

We’ll likely spend 90% of the time bouncing from condo pool to beach but the rest of the time should be spent consuming local seafood etc.  We are huge food and local history fans.  Anything the hive can suggest?

Look into Elizabeth on 37th in Savannah for a fine dining option. Pricey, but a nice combo of good eats, a local historic landmark and that famous hospitality.

We always liked going to Tybee island.  Kids would have fun going to the crab shack they can feed the alligators.  Elizabeth’s is fantastic.

Nice!  Will check out Tybee for sure. Hunting restaurants and seafood shacks.  We find lunch out on vacation is easy and dinners are generally tougher.

Fort Pulaski is pretty interesting if you are a history buff.

We’ve been to Savannah several times. Lots of good dining options. Consider a trolley tour if you’re a history buff and have kids. You get a fair bit of info in short period of time so kids don’t loose interest.

Red Fish on Palmetto Bay Rd. is my favorite fish restaurant on HH. Very nice wine selection. For kids choose one of the others available; Fish Camp on the south end, Skull Creek, Hudson's on the north end, etc. . All of the beachy stuff is available and there is a zip line, too. If you don't have good access to the beach use Coligny Beach, which has tons of shops and little restaurants; very touristy but fun. I lived on the south end and usually ate at Chow Daddy's, It's Greek To Me, Sea Shack. Mellow Mushroom for good pizza. Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen for fast food/drive through.

Bluffton downtown is close by and Beaufort is interesting, too.

You can catch the public ferry to Daufuskie Island and rent a golf cart to drive around in. There are two decent casual restaurants available to the public. If you go there let me know, lived there, too, and can expound. By the way, you can buy really nice real estate for very cheap but expenses are high and it's not available by car.

I'll second the trolley tours in Savannah. There is a cool cemetery tour and others. Remember, it's really hot and humid this time of year.

Appreciate all the good recommendations. All.  Really looking forward to it.  We found some great last minute deals on HomeAway.com.

I’ve been there 13 straight summers. Sick of it, to be honest but we go with the families in-law. There are worse places to be.

If you find yourself in Sea Pines, you can get a great breakfast at a place called Low Country Produce.  I’ll 2nd the Red Fish recommendation... but not for youngsters. We always stay near a tourist trap called The Salty Dog, at the south tip of the island in Sea Pines plantation. At the Dog, the food is adequate, live music uninspired. Decent people watching if drunk white people entertains you. But they have expensive ice cream that is cold. If you want to rent a boat, go off island and save a LOT

"Play on beaches, eat shrimp" is a pretty good overall plan. Two good places to take kids who are interested in vehicles in Savannah would be the Ships of the Sea Museum and the Georgia State Railroad Museum.

ooh - always good to have rainy day activities indoors - was planning most of those for Savannah but the sea museum would be cool.

There is also Ft Jackson, not nearly as far out as Pulaski.

Depending on the age of the kiddos, you should see if Shannon Tanner is performing.

He puts on a fun show for the kids That is also fun for the parents to watch.

We did a dolphin cruise with him one year, and saw him perform a couple times outdoors. I think it was a Wednesday evening show at Shelter Cove.

For history stuff, the forts are cool. The train museum is fairly cool and there is an air force/navy museum right off 95 out near the airport. Young kids, there is a kids museum that I think I is just around the corner from the train place. Took our grandkids to all these places a couple of years ago, then 2,6 & 7 and they had fun for a few minutes at each place.  Older kids may appreciate it more. Little kids loved the kids museum,  mostly an interactive playground outdoors.
