Learn me: Moving to Kentucky

Out of the blue I presented with a job opportunity that would require me to relocate to Elizabethtown KY a few years down the road. Are there any GRMers that live in the area and can share their experience?

I think I am seriously most excited to be within a reasonable distance of the Challenge (about 10hrs per Google maps)

I am a western boy having grown up in CA and spending the last 10 yrs in UT. I know I will miss the mountains and deserts, but I do enjoy dense hardwood forests too which are uncommon out west.

What is the car culture like? From what I can find smog and vehicle inspections are not an issue. Where is the nearest track for hpde? Is there an autox club that does events nearby?

It seems that real estate prices are pretty reasonable and I might even be able to afford a few acres. Our current house has fruit trees and a decent garden so it would be nice to maybe expand that hobby.

Corvette museum and road course.

Louisville isn't too far away, and neither is Nashville. Few hours or less. Occasional snow, but not much. Lots of twisty roads.

Cheap cost of living.

Oh yeah, and used cows for sale, somewhere around there.

Enjoy the Midwest. It really is great.

Etown isn't much to speak of but the overall area is decent.

Relatively, cost of living is cheaper but so are wages so it's just as if not one of the most expensive places to live. Might snow for a month. Don't bitch about the heat and humidity in summer or they'll know yer a furriner. Loser errr Louisville is a hr north, bowling green is 30 min south with nastyville errr Nashville another hr further.

After that I don't have anything to offer being here on the way Far East side.....

My outsider's view is that it is a town built around and only there to support the military base, Ft. Knox.

No really, I live in Elizabethtown! I think I'm the only GRMer in town, but there are several in louisville. Great autocross scene in the area and a kick ass road course an hour south in bowling green.

Few things would incite a riot quicker in Kentucky than calling Kentucky the Midwest.

I miss home, a couple hours west of ETown, but a much more rural area. Probably not enough that I'd ever move back before retirement age. I've been gone since I was 19 (I'm 35 now), but there isn't much in my home county except for coal mines and farms.

You can drive over to Lexington and go to this once a year:

Do they consider it "The South"? Speaking of that, how's the quality of the bbq compared to Kansas City (the only bbq destination I've been to)?

I had a hard time thinking of Kentucky as south growing up. I think geographically it's Midwest but people-wise it's definitely southern.

My bad. I grew up on southwestern Ohio then moved to Indianapolis. I don't think of Louisville as far enough away to be in another geographical territory, but it definitely is.

Agree Kentucky is the south. West Virginia is the hard one to classify. It's not the midwest but neighboring Ohio is. It's not really the south though neighboring Kentucky and Virginia are. It's not the northeast like neighboring PA is. It's not really a mid-atlantic state like neighboring MD is. I've always somewhat suspected that each of the regions thinks WV is in some other region other than theirs.

In reply to T.J.: That's an interesting observation about WV. I have another one. I think it's funny that when I travel in WV I see only a few Confederate flags, but when I travel in Central and North East PA I see them everywhere. Maybe the populations should swap places?

The confederate president was born there. They had slaves. I have ancestors from Kentucky who were brothers on opposite sides of the war.

Border state, but part of the south if forced to make a distinction. Definitely not the midwest.

Neat tidbit of history there, Kentucky's slaves weren't included in the emancipation proclamation.

Grew up in central KY, Washington county. The story I heard was Ky is south except for Louisville where they let the union army cross the bridge.

Elizabethtown had a movie by that name a few years ago. And was actually shot on location, most media things based in Kentucky are shot elsewhere. It's a nice enough place with good variety within a reasonable drive. Lexington is prettier, Louisville is bigger. KYR is your local SCCA chapter, they race in Louisville and at the NCM. CKR is Lexingtons chapter.

Yeah, they left the border states out to try to assuage them to stay in the union.

I remember watching that, definite chick-flick, though I don't remember it being unbearable.

I've stopped at the exit there a few times over the years while passing through. The gas station bathrooms were clean, so that's way more than a lot of communities have going for them.
