Can't sleep so I am trying to find a used iphone 3gs but the prices on cl and ebay are way more than i though they would be. So now I am looking at phones with broken glass and fixing it.

Have you done this before?

Easy. I bought a kit from Amazon for about $15 - even came with the tools - and looked up "replace iphone 3gs screen DIY" on teh Google. Took about 15 minutes to do my daughter's phone, going slowly and carefully. Seems to work 100%.

It was called "OEM glass" or something. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=B002XT355S&x=0&y=0

Yeah it is pretty easy. Before the rest of the world found out how easy it was I used to buy broken phones for $30-100, fix them and then sell for $300. Now the broken phones seem to sell for just a little less than a non broken phone.

Find a guide online and it should walk you through it. Its pretty easy, just be careful with your fingerprints/getting dust under the digitizer.

Tips: Use a small suction cup to pry up the digitizer/LCD from the phone (after removing the 2 screws on bottom)

After removing the 5-6 screws that hold the LCD to the frame/digitizer DO NO PRY THE LCD OUT (unless the LCD is already broken, then who cares). The LCD is pretty fragile if you bend/put pressure on it. Instead, grab the metal frame and bend it out so the LCD just falls out.

Use a heat gun to remove the old adhesive from the old digitzer.

Good luck! I actually have a 16GB 3GS and 8GB 3G on eBay at the moment. Feel free to PM me how much youre looking to spend and I would gladly let it go for less than eBay prices if its reasonable.

IIRC, someone here was asking about a cheap smart phone for thier kid- not as a phone, but more a toy.

Hope they see this thread.

I think I still have a 3G somewhere. If so, it's yours. Not home this weekend, but I'll ask the wife as soon as I can.

Crap. Just remembered that the phone crapped out and we tossed it. Glass was 100% too. Sorry man, best of luck, someone should have a free/cheap one.

Thank you for the offer, too bad it died.

I also picked up the Amazon kit and by following the directions it worked just fine. Make sure you take the time to really clean all of the old adhesive off of the bracket. I would also suggest the application of some heat and smooth even pressure to seat the new glass to the bracket. Mine was off by half a millimeter so the glass wasn't flush with the rim or the home button.

I redid it and found the offending debris, after putting it all back together again it looked brand new.

Anybody ever done this with the Iphone 4?

The one I linked to was glass and digitizer together, so I didn't even have to deconstruct it.

Plenty of DIY videos on youtube for that. Heck whenever I want to know how to do anything I search youtube first, there is almost always a DIY there.

Sorry, just saw your post. I just mailed the 3GS off to Russia but I still have a 3G I could sell you. I also saw you're local to Tampa /St Pete (as per St Pete GP thread). If you buy an iPhone with the cracked screen I can meet up with you and show you how to replace it if you want.

Appears to be like it might be the problem I have. Cellphone regularly believes earphones are connected in so the only way to discuss on the telephone is through speaker phone or earphones. Similiar to your situation?

Same factor occurred to my friends iPhone 4. Definitely wasn't a easy over the reverse here is your new iPhone fix for him....leather iphone 4s cases
