The only opinion I would offer on the 17 since I have one is that it can seem rather bulky, but the larger screen is nice.

They are a bit of a pain to navigate and it seems to be different every time as well

Somebody scream "JUMP" and I'll jump! Supplies are limited! Act now!!! And yeah, 17" does seem like it'd be "bulky," especially for a chick (huh-huh.)

Seems like a great deal, but I'm am technologically retarded, so I don't want to make a $400 mistake.

If I read correctly in the initial post, the intention of the computer is to do quickbooks and surf the web. Pretty much, this sounds like my own usage and I have achieved this on a netbook for many years now. A little Acer One. It came with 1GB and I upgraded it to a single stick of 2GB ($30.) I have bought the units around christmas time and spent $199 on them.
Sure, it is small but I like the travel-ability. When it is time for some real work, I have my desk set up like a manual docking station where I plug in a 19" monitor (from a previous desktop) and usb plug in full size keyboard. Some time ago, I also bought a usb, remote CD/DVD drive so I can burn disks or load disked software if that is important ($30.)
We just seem to have different definitions of "budget computing." This computer has not hampered my ability to run a business, post on GRM, cruise Craigslist, watch some tv shows while laying in bed, etc.
Sure, I am not in the graphics or web design business, I just need basic computing and internet access.

You did fine. We just bought the wife a 17" Dell laptop. I thought it would be too bulky but she likes it. Usually has it on her lap sitting on the sofa in the family room.

I also bought a new desktop computer for myself.

Much nicer than our old XP machine on the right. And I don't understand all the fuss about Windows 8. It didn't take me very long to set up the desktop on the new machines to look like the desktop on the old XP machine. And the only program that didn't transfer over was the old cardfile program that came with Windows 3.1 that we had been using for years. I had to find a new program that was 64bit rather than the old 8bit one.

You did good. As previously noted I've purchased 4 laptops from their outlet now and all have been great machines.

I love my 17 when just sitting on the sofa but if I have to go anywhere with it then it becomes a pain in the butt. The 14 is a good package (let the jokes begin)

DAMN.
I was just out at the Dell website and there are no more bargain, quality spec'ed, 14" laptops out there. All I could find out there is that overpriced and oversized 17"er that you passed on and like you, that is the last thing that I would ever want.

Would you be willing to take $500 for that 14"er you have coming????
I would pay you extra for shipping so you can ship it to me once it arrives to you??

A word of caution on B&H Photo. I have had 2 purchases from them. The first, high quality excellent piece, the second was a debacles took a month to get the product and it was missing half the stuff.

Just be careful.

Luckily, the Man of Poop here was extremely wise and purchased through Dell outlet. He held the infinite wisdom to bypass that rotten B&H.

You did good!

After two Dell 17" laptops (one is 9 years old!), I have to say that for my use, a 14-15" laptop seems to be a good compromise of portability and usability. The 17" ones have a great screen if you're watching movies a lot, but they weigh a ton.

Damn I am late to the party.

Wife bought this one a few weeks ago... http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-15-3521/pd?oc=fndoc91&model_id=inspiron-15-3521&#!stoneId=configTab

She got about 70 or 80 off with a Dell coupon and ebates deal.

Saved $92 off this one with the 20% off deal. I am amazed at how nice it is. I was thinking I'd have to buy an external CD drive. No need :) Keyboard is nice, screen is nice. Everything loads super fast.

Considering adding Avira and uninstalling Mcaffee, as it's already screaming at me.

Yep get rid of McAffee and install Avira or AVG Free, or MSSE if those are too noisy for you.
