Mom and her brothers did the tamping job when they were kids.  They would use the combine to cut the green corn and chop it into little chunks.  Then feed it up the conveyor to dump it in.  It was their job to walk in circles as it filled to get as much air out as possible.  When the silo was full, they climbed down the ladder.

I'm sure that my Aunts and Uncle had to do that at the farm.
