The local offerings seem to be VFW and American Legion. Elligible for both, though only just barely for VFW.
Think what I'm most interested in is supporting and connecting with vets in my area, maybe do some community service while I'm at it.
Motorcycles are a bonus, as I don't really have a group to ride with anymore. I know the Legion has a riders group, and there are various less-well-known veterans motorcycle clubs; I rode the coattails of a buddy with a local Combat Vets Motorcycle Assoc. chapter years ago, but am not eligible for full membership.
Anybody with experience?
I don't have experience but I'm curious as to what the membership requirements are for the VFW.
I do know the Combat Veteran Motorcycle Assoc. has a big chapter down here in central Florida. I've been at events that they were a part of and it seems like a great organization.
I too would like to find an org to volunteer at and connect with other local veterans.
In reply to stanger_missle :
VFW requires service overseas in a combat zone during a conflict IIRC. Or whatever similar terminology they use today.
In reply to secretariata :
VFW requires service overseas during wartime OR xx days stationed on the Korean peninsula, wartime or not. I think its anything with a campaign ribbon.
In reply to JohnInKansas :
Technically the Korean War has not ended, so it is still a war zone...
Edit:. Not trying to be a jerk, just explaining why Korea still qualifies. Reread my post and it sounds kinda like I'm being a jerk, but that is not the intent. :)
Team Rubicon is an organization of vets that goes into areas that have been hit by storms, earthquakes and such to help with the cleanup.
I have zero details. Dale Jr has been talking about them on the Download. Not really a community group, but it sounds like a worthy effort.
I would imagine the American Legion and VFW are like many other organizations, in that some chapters will be thriving while others not so much. Check 'em out - if you don't like what you find at first, find another local chapter and see what they have going on.
