I have someone who wants to do a documentary on my life from mid highschool untill now. in one way its a good thing because depending on how much its circulated it could help with stereotypes. in the same if it is seen by alot of people then its bring my entire life back into focus despite my efforts to escape my hs and such years to make life easier. so should i do it? the person who wants to do it has shown 3 documentaries at sundance in the past so they know what they are doing....
Personally I'd never want anyone to do a documentary of my life.
There are things I'd like to forget but much more I don't want anyone to know.

I'd do it. I don't find my life all that interesting at all- and I have a hard time accepting compliments/awards etc as a result. In my case, it'd be nice to see it from someone else's perspective.
... At 28 years old, should be short...
Does it help further your career or otherwise advance your goals? If not - why put yourself through it?
I would wonder why. Did you survive a horrendous disease, abducted by aliens? Ask a lot of questions. A stupid stunt on Facebook will eventually go away, a documentary may out live you.
But that's just me. My documentary about a guy living in a garage with too many projects and a patient wife will be out in 2013. That's when the Mothership comes back to remove the collar.

Were the probes at least everything you hoped they would be?

alot of documentaries have an axe to grind, if it is an axe that needs grinding and you want to help grind it, go for it
insert quip about male photographer and female subject
Unless I thought it was going to help sell my book/movie/brand/etc, I wouldn't do it.
Then again I'm an under 30 with no facebook, so I may be more private than the avg person of my generation.

Plays for the other team.

While it could be tremendously self-affirming, there's a chance you could be exploited. Do you like the film maker's other work? Is he protective of his subjects, or is he going to use anything to make it sensational, regardless of whether it hurts you?

Guys, consider a few things about this girl. She is a successful woman in a very male dominated job. From what she has posted on here, she knows her stuff. We haven't seen a picture of her yet, but she likes to dress up when she goes out, so she's probably decent looking. She enjoys an alternative life style. Has a wife and kids. Put this together, it's gotta be an interesting tale. I guarantee she has had her share of drama. Could it be exploited? For sure. I suggest that you get control over final cut, so you can control what might be uncomfortable or unacceptable.
The question is, did the 3 people whose documentaries were shown at Sundance like them? I have lots of family in "the biz" and cuts and edits are there to increase the ratings (or the producer/director's idea of what will make it a better film) rather than to make sure the facts are all correct.

cwh thankyou. there is more to me than that. in my upbringing and where i come from. i suppose i am decent looking. no where near where i wanna be. drame like you wouldnt believe. well the whole thing is sorta uncomfortable for me. it would show who i was as a teen videos ect from then and thats what i worry about because who i was then is in no way who i am now. i keep that out of my life and as far as im concerned for the most part anything from before 5 years ago doesnt exist. who knows. im gonna think long and hard on it. and then prob defer to my partner and see what she says.

I would echo Lesley's and The Purple One's advice up there. ^^^ Talk to the other subjects who've been through it with this filmmaker. See the films. That will make the decision for you, I'd bet. Good luck.

what has been done has been very well done. no question. one was on a gay football player who moonlighted as a dragqueen in college. and one was on ironically my cousin and her wife and the difficulties they had adopting children.

Again, you must have control. We have a lot of family interaction with gay people (daughter, granddaughter, nephew ), and I am quite aware of the challenges and bigotry involved. I am concerned about the sensationalism that could be used to the advantage of the producer, not yours. Don't forget, you have family here. It could be a grand adventure, though, and we all need those sometimes.

well i dont like the fact that it could bring attention to me from the people who have issues with lgbt people. but the idea that maybe just maybe it might show people not to put every lesbien or trans or gay person in a box that they are all like that. like not every lesbian is a dike. and not every transwomen is a complete girly girl who craves men. and not every gay guy is a complete fairy (again i live in oklahoma so those stereo types are very very prominent here)

I live in Ft. Lauderdale. Whole different situation here. As an old white straight dude, I couldn't handle the Okie thing. Hey, lot's of high end dealerships here, decent weather except for August and the occasional hurricane, lot's of support. Might be something to consider before you burn out.
I would encourage you to do it. Breaking LGBT stereotypes will help a lot of people lead better lives. Whether it is about getting jobs in a field they love, having kids, having families etc.
It is a worthy cause.
Also, my girlfriend and I would watch it in an instant. I love documentaries about cars and she loves documentaries about social issues and gay rights. :D
