Let's talk about lizards!

Yes, lizards. My garage is apparently full of them. I see them scurrying about on warm sunny days, and along the interior walls I see fairly large quantities of their funny-looking poop. If not for the poop, I wouldn't much mind, but I don't like them using my garage as a bathroom.

So, why are they here? What do they eat? How can I make my garage less inviting to them?

I'm pretty sure they're five-lined skinks. I know they're not geckos. I have my motorcycle insurance through GEICO, so I know a little about geckos.

Don't they like really warm weather?

They'll certainly be eating your bugs. Crickets, beetles, caterpillars etc. Do you have shrubs/vegetation lining the garage walls? Not sure why they'd want to be inside the garage, however.

I have a reptile lab. at University tomorrow. Maybe I can tell you more after that .

Nope. It's a vinyl-sided frame structure on a cinderblock foundation with a poured slab floor. Some shrubs on the one front corner, but other than that, just grass or pavement. I have noticed quite a few ants. I set out traps and spray a few times a year. The three overhead doors face south and open onto a wide paved area, so I think they are liking the heat.

I say let em cool out and deal with the bugs for ya. Lizards are alright by me.

We have little brown lizards here, I think they are called Cuban Anoles. More illegal aliens. The concrete slab in my back yard is Death Valley for any crawly thing. It's fun to watch them hunt.

I love the lizards in my yard. They keep the insects down. The only reason I relocate them outside, even when they're in my house, is the lack of food inside. I used to keep lizards in a terrarium, so I got used to them inside. In my case, they'd find a way out in a day or two at my old house, but not here.

The only way to keep them gone is to provide another place for them. Plant some shrubbery away from the garage and let them have at it. Relocate them if you must. Five-year-olds make the best lizard hunters.

We lost a pet gecko in our house once. We found him 5 months later, fat and well. There were no bugs during that time frame.

I miss the lizards we used to have at my folks' house growing up. Mainly blue-tailed skinks, but a couple anole varieties, if my inner 10 year-old is remembering correctly. We lived up hill from a lake in the woods, so there was plenty for them to feed on.

Now I live in the city with a derelict house next door with so much standing water in the yard (and the house now that the back wall has come down) that I can barely use my yard in the summer time for all the mosquitos that breed over there. Guess I need to bring in some bats...

Or maybe throw some fish in there to eat the mosquito larvae? And as an added bonus you'd have a fishing hole in walking distance!

I've got lizards around my house, but they really don't get into the garage much, and haven't noticed any lizard poo. I do enjoy seeing them, though, so I guess I can't really help with the lizard "problem".

Cool! I wish I had a garage full of lizards. Come to think of it... wish I had a garage.

I have lizards and snakes all over my place. The skinks are great at keeping the bugs down, but they never go into my garage because it is dark almost all of the time.

Do you have windows in your garage?

That is a "Hollywood Lot Lizard". At real truck stops they look more like:

I've never seen a lot lizard look so perky...or clean.

They don't stay small, get to about 16-18".

Op, the skinks have a secure place to hole up and a good food source. They are nice little fellas and their crap is better than the alternative.

We have big green ones here,too. Wild Iguanas, up to 4' long. Not dangerous, but certainly scary. I was surprised once when I saw a big one jump into a canal and swam like a green torpedo.
