Just curious, what was your job in the military? Were you med retired? Ever thought of doing the contractor gigs? Great money with the right skills. I been doing it for 10 yrs, 1 month after retire from the Navy. Home is in Jax, go all over the world for 3 months on/ 3 months off. Just an idea..

I actually did. When the old man who was renting his rooms out to the druggies died, the place got foreclosed on, flipped and sold to my current neighbor for $200,000. It took them a week to haul all the crap out of the place and the guys working on the place actually found a stash of drugs hidden in a backyard shed.

This is my first time! Always working on random junk cars in the yard, screaming at their kids and beating them, yelling at each other, like 10 people living there... I don't think it's an actual crack house but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some meth involved.
In all serious though, I'm recording her screaming at her kids and I want to save up the recordings and find a safe way to report them to CPS without them knowing it was their new neighbors. No kids need to live like that.

Tread carefully there. We've fostered children before because of abusive parents. Yea it berkeleying sucks, but doing that might have them removed from their home, put into the system and have a much more horrible life then they have now.

Perhaps you should focus your energy on putting your own house in order first.
I won't go as far to say mind your business. But remember that CPS stands for child protective services, if you think or feel that the children are legitimately endangered and not safe living conditions, then yes call. if it's because you think that the neighbors are loud and annoying yelling at their kids, and threatening them or spanking them, but you don't see bruises or cuts or any sign that the kids are in physical danger, then keep it in check and maybe talk to the neighbors. You may find out that they're both stressed as hell each working two jobs during a pandemic trying to make ends meet to put food on the table for themselves and their kids. I'm not saying it is the case, I'm saying you don't know until you communicate and ask. You'll never learn anyone's options or perspective until you do so and then listen.
If your lease is really the reason you don’t want to move, it is very easy to get out of a house that is not being kept up by the owner/agency. No heat is one of those. But I assume that’s not really the reason

The lease isn't the reason, it's just the next excuse, there will be more. Gotta love the guy calling where he lives a crack house, yet judging the neighbors.

A lot of places let you out the lease early if you pay the next month rent and forfeit your deposit. Which is fair given you won't have a ding on your rental history and they'll need to find new tenants

Definitely isn't just yelling and spanking. The kids are screaming at the top of their lungs in pain and screaming "please mommy stop it!" And you can hear her hitting them over and over and yelling "you stupid f*cking piece of sh*t, are you going to do it again?" So this isn't just me judging people either, Steve.
As for moving, I just talked with my wife and we both agreed we want to move sooner rather than later. There's some things that have to be taken care of first, though - most notably fixing the mustang and getting rid of it. We just had it towed to the house, so now I can start trying to fix that. I do really like the college program I'm in and fortunately it's online, so that's not a barrier to moving. We would just need to find a new city (we're thinking Jacksonville, so we can be Stampie's neighbors) and of course a job. My next semester doesn't start until January 11th so I have a bit of time - I just started the google IT program, which is designed to help someone get an entry level IT job. At my pace, I can probably finish it in a month instead of 6. Then, we can basically move to wherever I can get a decent job. Breaking the lease shouldn't be too hard considering this house has to be in violation of at least a dozen building codes. I would definitely welcome any critique of that basic plan.
Looking back, keeping all of my money in the stock market was a dumb idea. I should have kept a thousand or so in my savings account for emergencies. Since it was all in the stock market, I had to wait like four days to get my money, which made things much harder than they should have been.
Pro tip on paint: Mix enough of it together and it will always end up beige. Go get 5 "weird" gallons, pour them together, boom. Beige. Let er rip tater chip.
Pro tip on the neighbors: When you see them fighting, go drink a glass of milk. Its good for your teeth, just like minding your own business.
You were really lucky with the market. Never put money you expect to actually need in the market. At various points just within this year, you could easily have been down $1500.
I hate to sound like a curmudgeon but truly the Mustang is the boat anchor that is going to keep you two from going forward with life.
I have successfully rebuilt one of those engines when everyone said to just swap it out. (the car's owner was insistent and had the funds) It is a complicated and expensive procedure and I have a well equipped shop with all the right tools. A high end machine shop was also involved. I wasn't doing it outside in the front yard.
Try to locate the sound before you do anything else. In my case the customer's engine had dropped a valve. Head and piston were ruined. My suggestion is that if its internal you shouldn't attempt it. You are not set up for that task. If it spun a bearing there is some systemic issue and just putting new bearings in will not fix it. Plus in most cases the crank would require machine work. If you start and soon get defeated the Mustang becomes like many other Transmaros sitting on blocks in rough neighborhoods.
Even if it were patched together you couldn't get your money out of it, and it probably wouldn't last as your daily driver. And it sounds like you can't afford to fix it correctly.
Unfortunately, I'm seeing it as a repo, you take the credit hit, and move on with your life. And learn to never borrow money against a depreciating car again.
You've heard a lot of views and advice from everyone here. The big immediate hurdle seems to be to deal with the mustang. Happily, that's the item this group is best equipped to help you with. I'd suggest spending time in that thread with more pictures and sharing your progress so we can help get it squared away.

I called to set up an appointment to have my mustang towed tomorrow morning. They don't really do that, they said just call on the morning haha. I figure the earlier the better.
If you just called the law on your neighbors and they find out, and you just had a Mustang towed to your house, they may be taking care of your Mustang problems for you. Just make sure your insurance is in place for it.

You definitely don't sound like a curmudgeon at all, you sound like the harsh reality that I have to face. I can drop the pan, replace the bearings, and sell it to carmax (what someone suggested earlier) but if it's anything top end then I'm screwed. I don't have the facilities, tools, money, or know how to tear down the top end of the coyote v8, and the last time I turned it on to listen it sounded like the top end. Specifically the driver's side front cylinder, like metal hitting. I don't have the ability to swap a new engine in, either. It's a really bad and unfortunate situation, and right now it's my problem number one. Lesson learned, stock with LS V8s and old Honda 4 cylinders!

Some churches do something like an automotive ministry. Their focus often is to keep single mothers working by keeping their cars running.
I wish something like this was in my area. I might get involved with helping.
This leads me to.. find such thing to help your engine repair needs and repay with donating your time repairing what you can, like brakes etc.
I'd start by pulling the valve cover on that side and looking around the front of the cams. See if all the valves and rockers are correct.

I did that a week or so ago. Even pulling the valve cover on this engine is a pain! I didn't know 100% what to look for but I saw no burn marks and everything was in there tight, no wiggle room on anything.
small update: the tow truck driver put the mustang in kind of a weird place so I turned it on to move it a little... and the sound has changed. After I turned it on I realized it wasn't going to blow right away (although it's probably causing damage) so I let it idle for a second and really listened. I took a big breaker bar and held it to my ear and to me the noise sounds like the front is the driver's side head. Also instead of a constant clack clack sound it changed to more of a squeak. I recorded it so y'all can hear.

My speakers suck on my phone and I'm in a loud room......I hear vaccum leak as a part of that.
Edit: not in a loud room now and that's not a vaccum leak
