But regarding your opinion that other uses of a credit score should be "illegal, or at least heavily restricted" - I agree with you on that, too, but it isn't the way the world works.
So one must appease the credit score gods for reasons aside from the actual use of credit. Whatever that involves.
Perhaps the credit scoring industry should take up your cause for restricting "other uses". That might legitimize their industry further. Unfortunately, that's at odds with their business model, which involves selling credit scores. I don't know how to resolve that.
