Honestly.. how else would you want that car's "life" to come to an end.. rotting in a junkyard? Cut up and scrapped? how about sold off to somebody who can't appreciate the blood, sweat, and tears that went into the build and just runs it into the ground.
Like or dislike (I am in the latter camp) that is not a bad end for that car

What bothers me most about all this is learning that cars now have Facebook pages. That's, uh, special.
I don't care for the car, personally, but the owner obviously did and I feel for him.

Im glad he is fixing it. Really, why not? With the piles of fairly nice E28s going to the crusher all the time, why shouldn't someone have fun with one that was already totaled?

Does not compute.
Sorry, it was a 58. He also had a 62 that I liked better
Damn shame, I loved the look of that car and read the build thread last night, glad to read it's being rebuilt yet again.

I don't care if he rebuilds it or not, it's his car and whatever floats his boat his cool with me. All the existential poseur crap about being connected to it is pretty lame though. You want connection? My Grandfather bought an AMX new in 68 and owned until 2010. That's 42 years of driving, racing, and winning with it. *That* was a connection. My neighbor had (he died) a 1962 Thunderbird that he bought new. He still had it over *50 years* later. He courted his wife and delivered his son in that car. *THAT'S* a connection.
Four years doesn't even cover the payments on a new one, and it sure as heck doesn't qualify it for an epic soul-stirring dirge. Just build the damn car and stop yapping about it.
Disagree.
You have no way to judge the connection that others may have with their car.
I've had my current Celica for a little over 3 years now. You can pry that sucker out of my cold, dead hands. I don't think i've even put 15k miles on it since i got it.
Quite honestly, looking at your other posts in this thread, i think you're making the statements because you don't "get" the car, and you've already stated that you "hate it." There's no reason why you would have a connection to the car, nor would you understand one.
Not attacking, not trolling, none of that.

You actually make my point exactly. You are still in the "lust" phase. You haven't actually done anything worth that much of a connection yet. (Not discounting all of your work, just saying). If a car you liked more (some mythical AWD turbo Celica JDM thingy let's say) came along and you had to sell the current one to afford it, you would do so in heartbeat.
Look man, I've been there. I had a car that I restored. I built the engine with my own 2 hands, designed the turbo system, replaced half of the body (and interior), drove it cross-country twice, and competitively raced it over the course of 3-4 years. I sold that car 5 years ago and never regretted it, because it the big scheme, it still wasn't all that much.
Again, I am not discounting his work, or his "vision", I just want the internet to STFU about it. It's not that great of a car anyways and didn't do anything but inspire some internet chatter.

I wouldn't sell it in a heartbeat, actually. Plenty of those oppurtunities have come and gone, and i haven't done it. As a matter of fact, i got an offer of $4k for the car from an old friend on Wednesday. There happens to be a Celica AllTrac locally for $4500 obo. I turned down the offer.
Instead, i almost continually try to get rid of my MX6, which is a car that i've actually sunk more man hours into, have driven more miles, and is arguably a better platform to start with. The connection isn't there. I like it a lot, i think it's a great car in general, and if i have to be honest with myself, it does almost EVERYTHING better than the Celica does/did, even performance wise. (Handling is the only thing it lacks, but i have wheels/tires/swaybar ready to go on when i have time that will even things up.)
I've only had THIS Celica for that long. I consider it a continuation of my original build that started 7 years ago. Lost the first one due to rust.
It's all just opinion, really. Sounds like you're not a fan of the "BMW Art Cars," either.
If the MX6 sticks around... you can reasonably expect to see something along the same lines as "Rusty Slammington" come of it. I'm bored, and normally i'd just add more power, but the car is already borderline suicidal, and there's nowhere i can legally explore what it can really do anyways. (exhaust not legal for NHRA or SCCA.)
Your side dump is NHRA legal.

FWD drag racing isn't anything i REALLY have an interest in.
At least not enough to deal with the consequences of what would happen if i made myself get enough traction to hit the 11s the car has the power to do. (Bye bye transmission!)
Is it really legal by the way? From what i've read, the fact that it exits right in front of one of my tires is a big no-no. I could be looking at the wrong ruleset, though.
100% legal for FWD turbo cars.
Hrm. Interesting. Might have to keep my eye out for another Toyota E153 trans to convert to.

Yeah, you think I can pull a 62 TBird over on SWMBO with a 73 Javelin, an 86 944, both of our DD's, a go-kart, and 2 scooters already on property?
Now, if you had a 1959 Buick Electra...
Ben, DO IT!!! out of the damn hood! go Stanced yo
I didn't really read responses, all I got to say is, WORD!!!
While I really don't get 98% of the Hellaflush, illest, Fatlace, Stanced, Stanceworks, Hardparked berkeleybags I think the relationship Burroughs has is just something we can all relate to, I mean, like said, he's KNOWN with that car in all the above themes. Seen him and talked to him at a few VW shows and H2O, awesome dude for sure, so while his car may be one of what I said above, it doesn't berkeleying matter because it's a piece of himself that others don't understand but only the true car enthusiasts.

Personally, I don't like the hellaflush thing (...and even bought the hellafunctional stickers) but I admire his dedication to rebuild it.
Since we're somewhat on the subject of connection with cars, I figured I'd tell a little story. When my grandfather was a child he would wash his teachers husband's '34 Ford Sedan for money. He did this for a couple years and then went to fight in WWII. When he got back from the war (Late 1945) his old teacher gave him the '34 Ford Sedan. He drove it across country with my grandmother plenty of times, up to Alaska and back, and my father learned how to drive in it. He restored it in the 90's and put a 302 in it with a C6 trans, painted it candy apple red, and redid the whole interior. About 2 months ago I detailed the whole car for him and he let me drive it. To most people, they think "Ok, cool you drove your grandfathers old car," but they don't know the back story to it. He's owned the car for 66 years and the plan is to keep it in the family. Now THAT is a connection.

Awesome story, turboHLS30....cars like that are more than just appliances, they are rolling depositories for memories.
Thank you, I completely agree.
