So many onions.
Congratulations! The world needs more people like you and your wife, people who are willing to completely up-end their own lives to help out a kid in a tough situation.

I'm at the desk with a real keyboard and want to share and maybe give you some ideas. Our daughter Jane came to live in our house at the age of 7 weeks old. This was a clean and clear adoption that had no legal way to "not go our way." But, even with that assurance there are still some hoops and hurdles. We suffered one court rescheduling, etc. With that said, Jane was 11 months old before the court room date came that made the adoption legal. We really wanted to accentuate that day and make it a great day, so, we planned it like a wedding. Weddings/marriage is easy to reverse, adoption doesn't really reverse so its bigger than a wedding! Also, lots of weddings happen in court houses.
We found out by asking the court that we could have guests, as many as would fit in the court room and that the court room would otherwise be "private" for that time period (maybe 30 minutes) to just our people. We also heard that no photography in court building but that for adoption the judge allows one, and only one, camera into the room. We have a niece with wedding photography experience who shot the event much like you might a wedding. My wife found a summer baby dress she liked and we dressed in complimenting colors, again wedding like. The real tear jerker, and this was my wife's idea, is that we had the dress monogrammed with Jane's initials for this was the day that her name would be legally changed to those initials. We named Jane after my mother and moved her birthname to her middle name. The intention being that the new first name ties her to our family but her middle name keeps her tied to her origin.
We packed the courtroom with about 40 family and friends and afterward we rented the private room of a downtown restaurant for a little reception ala wedding.
So, with all that rambling, my advice is don't just make it the day you go downtown to sign some papers, make it the biggest day of her life...so far!
The Judge loved it and joined in on the fun.
While writing this, I realize that Jane, now age 8, has never seen any of these pictures and the other more than 300 pictures taken that day. You see, Jane does not yet know she's adopted but we have many pictures to share with her at the right time.
This is the feel good thread of the year.
Gotta agree with others though, must be sponsored by onion cutters.
