Because sound does not travel in space, need a megaphone to make yourself heard.

We've known this for decades.

It's an unspecified technological equipment analogue, so it can be whatever the player imagines it to be.

Well, yeah.

We have a friend who is a child psychologist and his wife is in a related field. They decided their children would never have contact with toy guns of any description, including water pistols. The older ones were about 8 or 9 and Kevin heard the unmistakable sounds of bang, bang, shoot, shoot from outside. An investigation found the daughter with "Barbie", both arms above her head, one leg folded down at right angles being used as as a pistol

I'm 52. I guess not. No clue what that is.
You're older than that. It's Lego. Megaphone, if I'm not mistaken. You might have seen something like it in the Space Lego back in the day, but I'm pretty sure it's newer than that.
I think it does date back to Classic Space. I've got a few. Also the bazookas and walkie talkies.
Currently reconstructing LL928 out of the original 1979 pieces that are on their third generation of kid...
Oh, so that's why I didn't get it. I'm too old.
I'm 57, and I'm not too old.
The age cutoff seems to be 1961, when Lego contracted with Samsonite to produce their blocks in North America. https://www.lego.com/en-us/history/articles/e-production-of-lego-bricks-in-north-america#:~:text=Production%20of%20LEGO%C2%AE%20bricks%20in%20North%20America%20The,a%20licensing%20agreement%20with%20Samsonite%2C%20the%20luggage%20manufacturer.
I'm too old.
According to Bricklink, the megaphone first appeared in 1982 and was used in a bunch of space sets in 1983 and later. So base your "too old" math on that :)
My mom's family is from the Stratford area. Grandma had a big bucket of LEGO sweepings from the factory floor (literally) that we would play with.
Why would a spaceman need a megaphone?
Lego is like that. It's all about creativity. Or at least, it used to be, back when I was a kid. And the Dead Sea was only sick.

That is one thing that bugs me about "modern" Lego sets. Formed pieces to be the complete car frame or helicopter chassis....BORING! Let me build the whole thing out. Plus, it gives me more pieces to rebuild later. But, that's also part of their economic model.

My older sister, who fancied herself the last of the hippies, did the same thing with her 4 boys.
Thereafter, any vaguely L-shaped stick became a firearm. Not actually a meme, but:

Had a teacher who was similar. Breakfast one morning, her son had taken bites of his toast so that it looked like a gun and was "shooting" his sister.

I don't remember the megaphones as guns, but the "camera" from the same era was clearly a bazooka.
One of my friends used to turn the heads around on his space minifigs because he felt they shouldn't be smiling when blasting each other. This was when they only had the one smiley expression.
Building LL 928 again is interesting. It's not the pieces that have really changed, it's the level of details in the instructions. The custom chassis, etc allows vehicles to be built at a smaller scale and they're not direct replacements for something you can snap together, so I'm okay with it. The best part is that (almost) all the Speed Champion cars still use the same dorky steering wheel that's been around since the late 70s.

I didn't realize the AR15 came in so many variants.
I love this place. How many of us are working, but are taking a bit of time to read through a comprehensive breakdown of the development of the lego ray gun?
