Well, that's what it means in Latin :)

English mugged Latin for a lot of things, not always keeping the same meaning smiley

Take the word "decimate".  It means to execute 10% or something in Latin, means to completely destroy in English.

No, it means kill one of ten in English as well, for those who know English.

So even if he doesn't spend the $15,000 or overnight parts from Japan he will still decimate all since one out of ten cars will probably break or have other issues that cause them to lose.

This is the kind of stuff that got me kicked out of Movie Night in college when the first FF was the movie.

Having talked with lots of Germans, although this is surprisingly accurate, it's also a demonstration of the limitations Germans have speaking English. Germans learn to speak very formal and proper English, but they don't understand how to *play* with English the way a native speaker does. They only learn how to speak like you would compose a business letter.

English is one of the easiest second-languages to learn, especially for a German speaker. But it is one of the hardest to master.

[deleted long explanation about what grammar actually is]

To add onto this German discussion, don't you ever think Germans can't make a joke! They just do it after the work is done.

There's wordplay in other languages as well. I've always felt that you're not truly bilingual until you can make jokes in the new language. You always start off with the proper, correct version of the language before you have to deal with the messiness of slang, local vocabulary and puns. I learned French in school and was fairly fluent, but it was proper Parisian French so I was a little rough in Quebecois and the slang from the Haute Savoie region of France. And let's not even get started on French comedy movies like Taxi.

I took French for two years in college, which probably makes it sound like I'm closer to functional than I am.

99 as "four twenties ten nine" was pretty much when my head exploded.

Now I mostly Duolingo Spanish because there are quite a few Spanish speakers here, and I want to spend more time in Spain. I also sometimes Duolingo Japanese because I am an idiot and haven't banished the idea of becoming "tourist-useful" at basic Japanese, while all evidence suggests I'm never getting past preschool level.

I think the i7 is sort of self-memeing. There isn't really anything that needs to be said, is there? I mean outside of involuntary wretching noises.

There are lots of websites that let you search shopping inventory in Japan, if you know where to look. Buyee is one of them. Here are some examples, I hope that aids you in your quest. All those pictures were taken in a Japanese Walmart-equivalent store, so there's plenty out there.

The i7 pic? Yeah, Road & Track hit me with it before I'd even finished my coffee. Rude awakening, that.

Yeah, but that's no different than the classic 'Murican "Fourscore and seven years ago..."
