Hunter Harrison was the creator of the current problems and he became a rich man running CSX from a hospital bed.  Crazy story if you like business stories.

Hunter Harrison also spent time in charge of Canadian Pacific and Canadian National and cultivated his own crops of proteges who took over after he left, like Keith Creel at Canadian Pacific.

When I was selling to EMD (Progress Rail) a design engineer told me that the train engineer should remove the engine covers and inspect inside before a cold start.  The joke was nobody did that.

Starting a v12 or V16 2-stroke diesel engine is not as easy as a Camry.  These guys need people to run those trains.

I'll pile on the RR geeking here. We recently had a locomotive shipped from Iowa to Maryland. It got tied up at a CSX hump yard for a WEEK, not to mention multiple weeks for the BNSF to CSX transfer.

The Class 1s are a PITA to deal with. Ironically, the smaller short line RRs are in many cases much better run.  I was doing some work with an SL out here in MD that was running service with 3 locomotives from the 1950s.  But, they were impeccably maintained, and they only needed, at most, 2 on any given day to make service. They had a couple yard switchers they could press into service if needed, too.

I love this Norm Macdonal crack:  "Also in entertainment, the play “Hiroshima,” a tribute to the victims of the first atomic bomb, with music and singing by Yoko Ono, opened in New York City this week. One tearful Japanese survivor of the attack who attended the premiere called the play, quote, “the most horrifying experience of my life”!"
