I don't know, but to add confusion to befuddlement, supposedly he was inspired to write that song while driving through...Maryland.

The easiest explanation is that was he was E36 M3 faced drunk most of the time.

Could have just been the words that were close-enough-to-accurate that also sounded the best. "Mainstreet" by Bob Seger is actually about Ann Street, off of Mainstreet. But Mainstreet works way better.
