But it would take a lot more than that to produce ethanol pure enough to run a car on.

A pot still like that would come off around 40% using normal 8-10% mash. You can of course distill it again to raise your proof but getting to 95% is very hard. Not to mention you're going to get maybe one gallon of 40% in that run. Lots of work for not a lot of driving. My first column still was given to me by a guy that was making his own ethanol for vehicles. He had his tax papers and everything.
