I assume it is.  It's definitely a diff cover.  I think the point being that if you tried to recover using that hook, you'd either yank the hook off, berk up the diff cover, or both.  Best case scenario is you're still stuck; worst case is you're still stuck and your diff fluid is all over the ground, and either way you're $50 poorer.

Stop by South Carolina. Everyone else does, and then the berkeleyers want to stay. We are the fastest growing state in the Union. 

We have finally made it into the top 10 worst states to move to and the shiny happy people still keep coming. Maybe the law that went into effect yesterday will encourage some people to go somewhere else.
