The answer is simple. The airspace over the US does not allow for trans/supersonic overflight, except that space shuttle thing a few years ago. Therfore, all the USPS delivery vehicles have to divert over the oceans to slow down enough to stop at your house. The extra tim einvolved is from driving back from the coast and of course dredging up the remnants of the failed decelerations. Or maybe its because it run by a semi-governmental agency.
