We had square dancing in gym class in NY in the 80s. Rumor was that Henry Ford pushed it in schools because he hated jazz.

I think it was part of the PE curriculum in Canada.
Neven know when a hootenanny might break out. Best to be prepared.
Believe it or not it was part of elimentary school curriculum in the UK in the 70's!'
Wait, does this mean that there is UK country and Western music out in the world? Farmers losing their lories and heading out for a pint?
90s Southwest PA square dancing in elementary School checking in.

Nope. Northern Illinois, too. We learn hard and fast that you NEVER stop in the middle of a hoedown.
More northern Illinois who did it at some point in school. I think I remember it twice.
I am disappointed that I never got polka dancing lessons.
Shoot, I learned how to square dance in 8th grade PE and that was the early 2010s in the NC mountains.
Meme unrelated.

Thank God I grew up in Florida.
No square dancing for me. I grew up in South Carolina so schools taught the Shag instead.
They even had lessons on South Carolin Public TV.
Boring facts incoming, skip the text and go straight to the memes if you don't want to know:
Square dancing in PE wasn't really about square dancing. It was just a way to learn spatial awareness and coordination. Similarly, playing recorders in music class was more about learning notes, and seeing if you had an aptitude towards playing an instrument in general. Much cheaper to find out on a two dollar hunk of plastic than a several hundred dollars (or more) instrument.

Interesting that there is an Idaho sticker on that back window...
Idaho kid here, we also square danced in the '90s.

As an adult I asked a teacher about it and they said it was more about making kids comfortable with human contact. I of course then asked "WTF was the parachute for then?" It was the equivalent of movie day
I learned to Irish dance but only because I have three older sisters who forced it on me with the threat of death. Or no ice cream, I really can't remember.
