Considering that 99.999% of the piston's momentum is linear, along the vector of the stroke, i would assume it's far more likely for the piston to exit via the head when something gives up badly enough to untether it from the crankshaft.

100% of the Kool-Aid Man experiences I have had with Subarus involved parts exiting upward.  In one case, it destroyed the radiator because the flailing half-connecting rod broke the block so hard that it launched the power steering pump at the radiator.

I figure the flywheel is at the back of the engine, no matter how it's installed in the car. So the engine in my Vanagon has the back at the front.

VW/Porsche is one case where the front of the engine is the FRONT, the flywheel is the front of the engine and cylinder #1 is at that end.

#1 is not the frontmost cylinder, mind you.  That would be too easy! smiley

I'd like to know what kind of logic determined that numbering order.  None of the cylinder numbers make logical sense from any perspective at all.  Must've been from when they liberated a train load of schnapps after the end of the war.

Apparently this messed people up sometimes because there was a mark that looked like an arrow, it was actually a pictogram of the flywheel and crankshaft.

Ah, but my VW has a Subaru engine. So which is the front now? My head hurts.

Truth be told, I have seen some amazing art printed on blotter paper, and would collect it even without a dose on it if I didn't think buying it would put me on yet another list.
