Thank you for that, I came across the term necropsy in a book just recently and I couldn't figure out how it was different. IIRC it was being used in the context of humans.

Correct! for thousands of years the world did not have any fungi or microbes that could break down wood. So every tree or plant that fell over just laid there.
Kinda makes you wonder how old they got.
Related fact, modern day we have a microbe that has learned to eat plastics. Isn't that terrifying?
Sorry, just getting to this post -- THAT'S AMAZING! I didn't know that thing about fungi or microbes. So maaayyybbbbeee the world ran out of open space for plants to grow and all the dinosaurs died of starvation??
