Except they were moving to California because the banks were taking their family farms after they could no longer afford to pay for their loans, and they bought cheap jalopies after rich businessmen would buy their properties for pennies on the dollar because they were the only people left who had any liquid assets.
OTOH I never saw the movie, just read the book.
I'm not sure if it's been covered.
