"So *that's* why they told me to stay off the brakes if the trailer starts to shimmy. Well, now I know that."
Appleseed said:"Good tires," thought Art. "Good tires, but not great tires"
Classic. Absolutely classic. Egan would be proud.
"Good tires," Bob mused, casually lighting a cigarette, "but certainly not great tires."

I don't know why people like this, unless it's ironic. What a terrible thing to say after you wreck a car.

In the old days, there used to be a magazine called Road & Track, and the last page used to be a photo feature called 'PS', in which a photograph was captioned so as to...
Oh, nevermind.

Perhaps the PS page could be considered one of the the founders of the modern automotive meme.
And, Bob didn't really say that after dumping his Ferrari in the bush. It was a joke, based on humor. Bob seems quite calm, you see, so the curious juxtaposition of his apparent attitude, with the grave situation creates humor... For some of us, apparently.

OK I promise I am not overthinking, and I read (some of) that linked thread, I just don't think it's funny. It says "Here is an asshat who blames things for his idiocy", why laugh at that?

Wait, where's the picture of them at queen Elizabeth's cabin visiting Andrew?

You're overthinking. The owner's name was not Bob, and as Streetwiseguy mentioned, he didn't say that anyway. It was simply a brilliantly funny caption to an unfortunate situation that the owner seems to be not terribly concerned about.
And here's another PS photo just for old time's sake. I have no knowledge of whether the Concorde actually did or did not say this to the 2CV, nor whether it was or was not considered funny at the time.
