Actually, real petrolheads call them by the chassis code and expect you to know exactly what that designates.
In reply to Duke :
No, that's just Porsche nerds. It's possible to be a real petrolhead and not know what a 996.2 or whatever is.

I hope that's true. I'm even a Porsche fan and most of the time I have no idea what people are talking about when they start talking about the the six gazillion variations of the 911 that have been made.

I was just trying to make up a number that sounded like a Porsche chassis code. Turns out it's a real one, one of the ones with the funny looking headlights.
I have to google the engine code for my BMW every time I want to start a conversation about it.

I know there are ones that were air-cooled and the newer ones that have radiators. They also make an ugly-ass four-door and an SUV. Hate to say it, but that's about as much headspace as I can afford to rent out to Porsche nerd-mode numbers.
Meme unrelated because this is the meme thread:

Every 1/2, 3/4, 1 ton truck looks the same to me, they're all pointless oversize boxes, but people can tell those horrible things apart at 500 yards. It's what floats your boat.
We could start talking long and short wheel base, exterior oil fill and a thousand other details just on the long hood cars, let alone getting into short hood 'G' series cars.

like this?

I'm an Engineer, and I probably use SOHCHTOA more in my personal life for DIY projects, laying things out, etc. than I do at work. I'll buy irrational numbers not being used much in daily life, but middle school trig is a needed life skill. Anyway, it looks very overcast in that pic, and he needs his hood up, so I'm saying it's not even a beautiful day. 0/10 for meme accuracy.
